Just back from our meeting last night and our club is looking around £25 of a rise this year. that will bring us up to near £700 each for adult members.
What are the rest of you playing?
Do you think clubs are pricing themselves out for the normal guy in the street?

Yes i believe you have a good point our fee's will be over £1.000 in 2008 but we do offer fee's on a sliding scale up to age 35 so we do try to make it afordable for the man in the street. Problem is that not all golf clubs have a full membership these days and as such the exsisting membership has to make up the shortfall so you have to try to be creative in the way you market your club.

Our fee is £500 this year.

I've been paying direct debit, I will actually be paying 2009 fees at 2008 prices this year. Which is good but I had to pay a full years membership then direct debit in the same year to get on the scheme.

This year the golf club is offering members the chance to pay their fees for the year by Direct Debit (with a 6% service charge), which I think is an excellent idea and should make joining a club a bit easier for people struggling to come up with a good wedge of cash at the wrong time of the year!

our fees were £750 last year, and worked out just over £800 if you pay over 10 months by DD.

I would expect a little increase next year, but havent heard yet

You mean your club charges younger people less than older people?? Sounds like an open and shut case of age discrimination!

surely you could say the same about junior, senior or lady golfers getting a discount too?
Juniors/the unemployed/students/seniors get a discount in lots of things because they don't have much/any income. Ladies get discounts because they usually have reduced playing rights. Seniors also sometimes get discounts if they've been members of a club for years and have paid many years' subs already, like a reward for loyalty. Charging a 25 year old less than a 35 year old just because he's a few years younger just seems bizarre to me. Both presumably have the same playing rights and the 25 year old could be earning twice as much as the 35 year old (who could also have paid 10 years' more fees) yet the younger man would be charged less. Hardly seems fair, does it?

I’m only playing devils advocate here of course.

Maybe it’s based round the average wage of a 25 year old being much less than a 35 year old? They must have some justification. I don’t think we can judge until we know the ins and outs of the scheme

Also – I would say the 60+ guys at my club are wealthier than the 20 something’s.

Yes your right on average a 25 year old will earn less than a 35 year old and sorry should have said over 65's get a discount as well.

Doh thats such a bad way of running things! im in my mid twenties and earn much more than many mid thirty year olds i know.
A senior is senior a adult is an adult etc etc etc.

i'm very happy for you

A 35 year old is more likely to earn more than a 25 year old but that isn't necessarily the case. It just seems a very arbitrary way of charging people and I'm sure any relatively low-earning 35 year olds would be very unhappy about it.

fair comment, but i do wonder if any juniors are put off their membership following their 18th birthday, when they discover the annual subs quadruple while they are earning very little money in most cases....

I will be playing as a nomad and pay & play at my home course as it’s municipal. The local private one is £450 joining fee + £63 a month for full membership (which is about £750) a year, the monthly fee is ok but throwing away £450 is something I just can not justify to the dear wife, I am sure I am not the only one who can not give away money like this.

Exactly we are trying to tie in club fee's to related earnings there is nothing wrong in that.
Now can we please can we get back to the thread ;)

No Doh it don’t work like that, these tangents can go on for days, sometimes weeks! Just go with the flow.

Dont see how you tie the clubs fee to earnings unless you ask every member to disclose this before joining?

What happens if a person changes jobs etc?

i'm talking about age related earning, which i agree is not perfect. I'll ask the council what they intend to do about it. ;)

Still seems weird to me but I suppose the members voted for it so they can't complain if they don't like it. New members also know the score when they apply to join so again, if they aren't happy about it they can go somewhere else.

What sort of adjustments are made to the fees anyway? How much would a 35 year old pay compared to a 25 year old? What about an unemployed person?
