Events the week before a major always have an interested mix of players in the field and this week is no different. Big Phil is playing this week instead of his usual pre US Open warmup at Memorial. Here's some excerpts from my preview
Robert Karlsson – I highlighted Karlsson a few weeks back as a surprise package at Colonial where after an encouraging opening two rounds, he fell away at the weekend. However he is coming to a course which he has finished as a runner up twice following playoff defeats in 2010 & 2011 so a victory here wouldn’t be considered a surprise. It is worth noting that his best week off the tee at Memorial and this is an area that Karlsson is not renowned for so if he can bring that form off the tee to Memphis he could trend quite highly. He also qualified for the US Open on Monday.
Russell Henley – There has been a great deal of talk about the potential of Henley since winning on his professional PGA Tour debut back in January at Waialee, His 72 hole total of 256 is the third lowest in PGA Tour history and he played the par 4’s a total of 17 under par for the four rounds. He has followed that victory up with some eye-catching performances most recently his tied sixth place finish at Muirfield Village despite a second round 77, He has strong par 70 form; his second win last year on the Web.com tour was on a par-70 layout as well a tied thirteenth place finish at PGA National. He has been very accurate off the tee on the whole this year and that will be strength this week.
