i only have one fear and that is flying!!!!!

it scares the *** out of me,i've made the fatal mistake of being obsessed with planes and how they work etc which in return has caused me to crap myself at the thought of flying.

i think watching every episode of air crash investigation and other aviation disaster programme's has added fuel to the fire.

the funny thing is i have never been on a plane but the very thought of it freaks me out and sometimes when i see a plane flying on the tele i feel all weird and awkward.

another strange thing is though i would love to fly a plane, being a pilot would definately be up there with the top jobs i'd like to do and i feel the reason for this would be that i'm in control and if any problems were to arise i'd know of them.....unless it was something very sudden that went wrong.

people always use to say to me that there was more risk of me crashin my bike but the fact is i was in control of the bike so it never ever crossed my mind........

Very understandable but I could quote many statistics about how it is the safest way to travel etc. but that won't help you. Are you planning on a flight for holiday or the like or is this just a generalisation?
As a former pilot of both fixed wing and helicopters I can assure you I never sat in the pilot's seat thinking the aircraft was going to crash, so you shouldn't think that when you sit in the back. If there was the slightest doubt that the plane was unairworthy it wouldn't be flying.

I hate flying because I am so tall (6'6") and they cram me into a such a confined space. I have had a few panics on long haul flights but only because of massive turbulence. Being a pilot would be nice though.

I used to fear flying as I hadn't flown much until my early twenties. Frequent flying for my job cured my fear. A marathon of flights around West Africa soon got me into the habit of flying and stopped my worrying about the what if's. I enjoy flying now and love the view from the plane window.

I do however have a strong fear of heights, specifically the fear of edges, e.g. cliff edges or balconies. I get the urge to jump and I think I get this urge due to some strange logic of taking control of the situation. I've had a panic attacking walking across a bridge before and nearly blacked out. It was awful

I used to crap myself going abroad, I was on the edge of my seat all the time a two hour flight took a lifetime. Been on a couple of dodgy flights also but they wouldn’t be dodgy to the crew, just another days work.

Many years later…..honest, a good friend of mine had a helicopter, a Robinson44. I turned up at his house not long after he got it and I didn’t really have a chance to say no and I was away up with him. Again I was bricking it, but he explained everything as we went along and I began to settle. This guy was racing at Silverstone and considering I had a press pass at that time he asked me to go along to do some photos, I was good at that back then. We flew from near Glasgow to Silverstone and back and that was an experience. Still on the edge though.

Then I had a chance to go to the Ulster GP to do some photos for the team that were running John McGuinness multi TT winner. We flew over there this time in a Eurocopter Squirrel, a turbine chopper that is real quality. Still bricking it and my good lady wasn’t too happy with me going up in helicopters.

However, one day my mate decided to go see Alistair McCrae, he was good friends with him. We then went on to see Colin and we all know what happened to Colin.

Well, I am one of the few people to have had the pleasure of flying with Colin. What a pilot, he had amazing skills, way beyond your normal commercial pilot.

I’ll never forget that experience as only a few weeks later Colin was killed in that very helicopter I was in.

Flying, I love it now and it didnt put me off.

Go to the airport and buy the cheapest return ticket you can find to the nearest airport, get on the plane, fly, land and do the same coming back... it's awesome. Not the same as standing on the edge of a cliff/balcony which is feckin' scary!

I don't like flying. Well, actually I do, but only in little planes, from private airfields. The sort where you turn up, get on, and go.

What I don't like is getting on a commercial flight. Park miles from the terminal, 3 hour check in, hour queue to go through security, crowds, people with seven bags which they think they can have as hand luggage, being herded about, cancelled flights without being told, over booking, 12 hours stuck in a chair, catching every one else's cold, being sat near the toilet, rubbish food, no sleep, heck, I could go on for ever.

i have the same feelings and thoughts:whoo: i thought it was just me:D

i'm fine with going up ladders etc and being on lower roofs but like you when i'm near cliff faces etc or even on the top level at a shopping centre and can see right down i start go all funny.i was actually thinking about it last night and i was trying to simplify the feeling of wanting to jump, when i tell people this they think "wtf:mmm:"....i can't explain it.

i know air travel is the safest form of travelling but there is so many commercial accidents that you never hear of,tbh the last few months have been quiet but usually each month there is 5-10 incidents and my thinking is that if something goes wrong with a plane the chances are you may not survive.

I'm not mad keen on heights or spiders, but I wouldn't say I say I was scared of them.

I've never got why people get scared of flying, my wife and her friend are both scared of flying to the point that when we go places I have to sit somewhere else because I can't put up with their whining. I keep pointing to the fact that if it wasn't safe then the pilots and trolly dollies wouldn't get on the fupping thing, never mind take it up in the air.

I'm genuinely surprised at the amount of people that have responded with flying.

I know it's a common fear, but the percentage among the small amount that have replied is surprising to me.

Flying isn't an issue for me which I'm thankful for as I wouldn't get to visit my friends in the US!

Two things spring to mind for me; spiders and death.

Wull,

Why not get a flying lesson. That way you'll know everything that's going on and feel much more in control. Also, a plane that size, even if the engines fail, you can still land it as the aerodynamics are still enough to get you down.

My old man flies a glider tug plane, and he's landed a few times without engines. Stick him up a 6 ft ladder to unblock the drains and he goes to pieces though! Go figure

It seems more people are scared of spiders and heights though.(me included).

Heights are dangerous, fair enough.

What is it with spiders?

Wull as a biker I agree about us being in control but we still have to deal with the idiots in the cars who cant use a mirror or look before turning.

Snakes terrify me but like Wull I'll watch every program on tv about them as I find them fascinating.

.

Bet tall spiders really freak you out...

I've flown pushing a couple of hundred times now, and the more I fly the less I like it. For me its a case of don't go to the well too often. The thought of a long haul in March is worrying, followed by Sicily in May then Nth Africa in Sept... I'll be sitting in the departure lounge thinking "I'm not getting on, I'm not getting on."

Spiders and heights - but only heights outside.
Ask me to climb a ladder to clear out the guttering and Wild Horses couldn't get me on the bottom rung.
Ask me to shin up a 5m high warehouse rack and I'd be up there like a shot.

And spiders just have too many legs.
