I played in a Bogey competition today, I'd never played the format before and quite simply I hated it, in fact I lost interest in it very early on, I thought it extremely negative.

I used to dislike Foursomes but now I don't mind it so much, same with Greensomes.

I think I have a slight issue with maintaining concentration at times on the course, something I can do when playing in a medal or stableford, this was why I disliked Foursomes & Greensomes at first because there was no continuity, sometimes I wouldn't putt or use a wedge for ages then suddenly have to at a critical time in a match, but now I've got over that, but, this bogey comp sucks!

My favorite is Matchplay

What's you favorite format and what formats do you not play or avoid and why?

Love matchplay, even foursomes. It's great going head-to-head with people.

Played in a 'string comp' once. You get a foot of string for every shot you receive by virtue of your handicap. You can then cut the string to a length when you find yourself in a bunker, or to move the ball into the hole etc.

Seemed like a fun, novelty event until about the 3rd hole when it got boring.

I like bogey - you have to change your mindset as you are playing the course and the course is an opponent that has already posted his score. When you stand on the tee and when over every shot you know what you have to do to half or win the hole.

My favourite is probably foursomes matchplay.

Not played Foursomes or Bogey but, from what I've heard, I doubt I'd like them so they're my least favourite.
And Matchplay - never really liked Matchplay for some reason.
Like Medal and a Texas Scramble is always a bit of fun as it gives you the opportunity to take on shots you might not normally try.

But bogey is matchplay. How can your favourite be matchplay but hate bogey? A lot of players have that mindset. You win, lose or draw a hole, just as you would with matchplay.

I like medal, bit I'm not too fussed about stableford. My favourite, especially in winter, is Canadian greensomes. Both of you tee off, then hit each other's ball for the second shot. And then you choose which ball to finish the hole with.

Because in proper matchplay I dont know my opponents score before I start the hole, so there is an incentive at the start of each hole to play it in as few shots as possible, this doesnt hold true in bogey where an eagle is utterly pointless as is a birdie on a shot hole. In matchplay you need to think as the hole progresses and adjust based on what you and your opponent are both doing, there is none of that in bogey as you know at the start of the hole whats needed.

Oh and ive never won a hole in bogey with a double bogey lol

Love matchplay, followed by stableford.
Dislike 4somes, its half a game and invariably I get the cack half. Still it beats shopping, or gardening, or decorating, or can you fix this, or......... you get the drift. ;)

I know it's matchplay but there's no variable, no putting the opposition under pressure, it was very sterile, I lost interest very quickly.

True - but there is also no hoping that the opponent will make a mistake, or not pull out a corker. You are completely master of your own destiny. This is double-edged sword stuff as it both forces and allows you to take on shots you might not otherwise take on. But it is a mind-set.

I don't hate any format.....but in order

Medal
4bbb
Bogey
Stableford
Foresoms
Matchplay
greensomes
Texas scramble

I like all formats, variety is the spice of life, but there are some that I'd not want to play too frequently, scramble format being the quickest to lose its appeal.
