Simple really, what engine type creates the best noise?

Always liked Porsche's howling V10 (Carrera GT) but a big block V8 pips it for me

The little cough a Rolls-Royce Merlin makes when going inverted. The early Merlins had carbs as opposed to fuel injection. Carbs don't like "inverted."

Interesting.. Didn't know the early ones were carbureted. Scary to have that technology pulling lots of G:eek:

My favourite isn't listed :(

My Laverda Jota 180 triple with straight thru pipes......reckon it was about 150 dB on full throttle

You're right, it wasn't just going inverted that caused problems. Bunting over into a dive would push the fuel back in the carb, affecting the float... nowt like a good bit of fuel starvation when you were in dire need of power

Cripes.. Brave souls those lads!

From my days of attending F1 in the 60s/70s the engine notes I best remember would be...

The BRM H16, the Matra V12 and the Ferrari Flat12...

Each had their own distinctive note way better than the very mundane Cosworth V8...

As has already been said still something very special about the Merlin V12....

I went to the Le Mans 24hr a few times around late 90's/early 00's and I'll never forget the earth rumbling sound of the Panoz, it was enough to loosen your bowels.

V12. Someone I know took me for a spin in their Vanquish about three years ago and I decided then that it was my favourite.

Also love the sound of the big Ferraris. E.g. F12 Berlinetta etc. They sound amazing. Once saw an FF scream up a road in the middle of Paris with the sound reverberating of the walls of the apartments in Montparnasse. It sounded electrifying and wonderful.
