Larger putter grips seem to be on the rise at the minute.

I've dabbled, twice, with the larger grip and again have found myself moving back to a smaller than standard grip.

The first time I dabbled was with a Super Stroke Mid Slim 2.0, but could never get on with the feel of it (prefer a paddle style grip) nor the feel it gave on putts outside 20ft.

The last time I dabbled lasted 3 months. After Super Stroke brought out the Flatso Mid 1.4 this year I decided to give it a nudge as it has the flat front I like and, for a time, results were good. However the honeymoon period soon began to wear off as, again, I started to struggle gauging the pace when lagging a putt.

Tonight I've managed to pop off the Super Stroke without wrecking it and moved back to a smaller grip.

Popped to AG at lunch then into the pro shop at a local range after work and tried all make an manor of grip on the putting greens until I came across one that offered the firm feel I like in a putter grip. I honestly thought I'd move back to the medium Iomic as I've always rated them very highley but in the end, found something I prefer even to that........ A Pingman PP58 Blackout :)

What do you think is when it comes to oversize grips? Here to stay or passing fad?

Has anybody else moved to an oversize grip looking for improvement only to move back again after a short time? Or is it just me that can't get on with them :D

I put a 2.0 slim on recently, not as much for the size but to get a parallel grip which is a consistent thickness down the length of the grip rather than tapered. If only they did normal grips like this!

Early days but think its staying

I have a one on a scotty Newport. i putt just the same with that as i do with the rest of my putters with pistol grips.

i don't lose the sense of feel. a few rolls with any putter and i am good to go!

they are all bits of low lofted metal used to roll a ball. no magic easy launch cog.

Silly question I know Gary, but if were that easy, why are more and more folk moving to the fatter grips?

Performance? Fashion? Marketing? Curiosity? All of the above?

I've had a Winn pro 1.18 for a few months and love it, can't see me changing back now. Actually prefer it to the super stroke.

Perceived benefits of reducing wrist action in the putting stroke compared to potential cost of a little bit of lost feel imho

My TT3 came with a Fatso grip on it.
Tried it for a couple of rounds and promptly changed it for a standard Winn grip.
Didn't like it at all.
I can see the benefits for some people and I think they're here to stay.
But you won't find one on any putter that I will own.....

when I only had 1 putter, I switched to a fat grip for a year. I was convinced it was the work of the fat grip. I've since realised I putt the same with pretty much any putter!

I have to admit. I do fancy putting a fat grip on an old 35inch ping blade! no reason other than I think it would work well.

A lot of guys at our place now have them, all claim they are great, none seem to have improved their putting (probably because they still don't practice)

I have small hands so the standard odyssey, pistol grip is quite fat to me. Have toyed with trying a parallel grip on my spare putter. Guess it's horses for courses. Is it a fad? Probably, until the next fad comes along.

Have a 2.0 on mine and prefer the feel and putter feels very solid with minimal wrist action

Have used the 2.0 mid slim previously and it did nothing for my putting. Happily switched back to the White Hot Pro grip on the Method which is far more comfortable and has had a noticeable improvement on lag putting. Fat putter grips are not for me, no thanks.

normal grip for me and under pressure I def get a bit steery and wristy so might look at the entry level fatboy whatever that is

It's a fad. Just like everything else in golf

if they are supposed to work, then why don't the companies put the fat grips on instead of the normal sized ones. Another way to part with your hard earned cash from those who want the fatter grip on. If you can't putt with the normal size, what makes you think you'll put with a fatter one on?

I've got a fatso 5.0. I got it on February/March time and it's fine. It does take any wrist action out. I use to catch the floor every now and then as I let my hands get behind and it's very rare that I do this now. I don't think it makes me putt any better or worse, but I needed a new grip and thought I'd give it a whirl. When it needs replacing I'll look to see what they have in the pro shop at the time, I won't specifically look for one of these. The main downfall with it is getting it in and out of my carry bag.
I know that it won't fit in most Putter wells in cart bags either.

Agree. Winn putter grip is my grip of choice also ahead of Super Stroke. Feels lovely although not sure my putting has improved much with it on.

Full marks to SuperStroke for an excellent use of marketing and patent application. It's all created a real buzz around something which is innovative but will only work for some (like most things). Lots of writing points to evidence they do reduce wrist movement which is generally good for putting - really like the options in size though, that's clever. I got on the bandwagon 12 months ago and really like the Ultraslim model. Can't stand the Fatso/cricket bat ones as there's no feel at all to me - my buddy playing of scratch would disagree, however...

Think they'll stay for a while but another innovation will take the limelight soon enough. I also imagine the R&A are watching with interest to ensure they are commensurate with the rules and ideals of the game.
