I am looking to take the wife, kid and dog (maybe in-laws) down to Cornwall over the summer, ideally would go for a week and fit 3 of rounds of golf in. So the advice I need, if anyone has it, is which area to stay?

Ideally the golf course wouldn't be to far away and perhaps there would be a choice of 2 courses, close to the beach and a village with a nice pub. I have never been to that part of England, so any advice would be greatly appreciated

Thanks
GS

Not golf advice but visit the Lost Gardens of Helligan near St Austell make sure you plan a day there and take in the cafe.
St Austell is quite a decent course and the Eden Centre is in that area as well as well.
Gets very busy traffic wise in school holidays.

The best courses in Cornwall are on the north coast so I would try to plan something on that side of the county. Best courses are St Enodoc, Trevose and Perranporth if you want links, parkland courses there are Lanhydrock and Bowood as the better ones.

There is also St Mellion in the south of the county, bit of a marmite course. Personally, I always enjoy playing there.

St Ives is a lovely fishing town, i played the west cornwall golf club and really really enjoyed it! a decent test with some awesome vies and holes!

You'd really struggle to beat Constantine bay near Padstow.
We stayed there last August,100 yards from the first tee at Trevose. There's stunning beaches a 5 minute walk away, all the facilities at Trevose, Padstow 3 miles away. St Enedoc is close by and also perranporth which I believe is a good course just down the coast.

The nearest pub is a 5 minute walk or there's the Trevose clubhouse.

Theres also plenty to do in the area for the family so everyone's a winner

I love Cornwall and had always stayed in Perranporth and then used that as a base as its so quite.

However, the last time we went we stayed at Mawgan Porth and really liked as well. Peaceful and so clean, as is most if not all of Cornwall but its beach was secluded and not over crowded and no louts to be seen all week :)

Thanks for the advice!

Based on some of the comments on here and after doing more research I am leaning towards the area around Trevose/St Enodoc.

Qwerty, where did you stay in Constantine Bay? Any accomodation you can recommend? What was Padstow like?

Thanks everyone

Padstow is not as quiet and quaint as it once was and is very busy and commercial now IMO.

What was Padstow like?

Thanks everyone

I go down there every year for the St Enodoc open, personally I love Padstein but as Fish says, it has become quite commercial. Not really a 'family' place but a lovely 'couples' place, are you taking kids? Need to shop around for restaurants, some are very reasonable, others charge absolute top dollar

We stayed at this place http://www.raintreehouse.co.uk/beaches-houses/constantine-bay/white-walls/
It sleeps 13 but there's lots of other self catering accomadation close by

Its best to head into Padstow early evening when the day trippers have gone, there's plenty of great restaurants and bars, I wouldn't say its overly commercial and if your staying over towards Trevose you can just pop into Padstow as and when you want.

Trevose also do a twilight deal, I think it's £25 after 4pm.

I've posted this before and I am sure I will again. This place has it's own 6 hole course on site so you can get round in 40 odd minutes for a sneaky hit whilst tee is cooking or everyone is getting ready in the morning. Course standard is not great but fine for a quick 40 min practice. http://www.kennacottcourt.co.uk/

Plus Bude golf course is near by which is a very interesting course. Lovely beaches nearby and nice pubs about a mile away. Only thing it has not got is a village that near by, although Bude is only 5 minute drive away.

Thanks, when you say commercial, do you mean load of chains and franchises around or what exactly?

Yes, I am taking my child, she is only 2, so would be looking for family friendly places

As a resident of North Cornwall I can concur that Padstow is/has become a hole of a place in the summer. Meva is far nicer but still very busy in the summer months.
As for golf my recommendations would be Trevose for a pleasent round of links golf, St Enodoc if your playing well as the church course will punish you every chance it gets. If it's been dry (haha) then Lanhydrock is a nice track to play but it does suffer with water when the weather doesn't play ball. Personally I don't like Carlyon bay especially if there is any wind at all and being at the top of a cliff it does suffer with the wind, it takes a lot of bottle to aim 30 yards out to sea to have a chance of hitting the fairway. Bowood is a nice course but can also be hit in wet weather at the bottom of the course.
You could try Killiow down near Truro. It's a cracking track with, what they say is, the hardest hole in Cornwall. I have to agree to some degree, it's a par 5 uphill with OOB all the way up the right and a stream with 3 pond running up the left centre of the fairway.
Hope the weather is good for you, and us, you'll have a great time.

Thanks, when you say hole....is it the tourists that go? The people that live there? The types of places that are on the high street?

Id say that the only problem with Padstow is that it's unbelievably busy during the day and it's a nightmare to park the car, if your staying in the town this is a problem, if your staying not too far away you can pop down there early evening when it's quieter.

That said its nowhere near as busy as St Ives, that place is an absolute nightmare. You'll have the same scenario in most of the Cornish harbour towns.

This is a nice place to take the family. http://www.holidaycornwall.co.uk/maenporth.html

Weve stayed there a couple of times. Good pool, good beach and restaurant on the doorstep and Falmouth is close by with loads going on and it's easy to park. there's a place called Helford Passage close by.....very nice.

Golf wise- Falmouth 5 mins. & Mullion 30 mins....definately worth a look

Padstow was a nice town when I lived there but now it's over done for tourists. During the day you can't move and if your foolish enough to have something to eat outside then expect to get dive bombed continuously by massive seagulls. Again that's the same for all seaside towns down here now.
Hengar manor near St Breward is a good central place to take the family out on trips, to the beaches on both coasts, up onto Bodmin moor and for golfing around the county. It has a nice pool with a bar for food and evening entertainment.
Another place to look at is The olde house at Chapel Amble. A little closer to the north coast but it's only about half an hour to the south coast from there and about the same to Truro. This also has a nice pool complex and has a petting area for the kids to see the animals as it is on a working farm but it doesn't have entertainment. There is a lovely pub that does fantastic food in the village.

I've got a cottage booked in July for a week, staying at newhall green. Was gonna play at bowood as its quite close.

Really fancy St Enodoc as well though.
