Faldo's RC uniforms - trendy or sad fashion faux pas?

Did you see the European RC team come off the plane in USA?

They were clad in brown bomber jackets and brown loafers, some had round neck shirts and some had casual collars, not a tie to be seen - to me it looked a bit like when your dad tries to get with it and wear clothes that are too young for him. :D

Should they not have been in trad golf match attire - i.e. blazers, collars and ties and grey/beige slacks??

Sticking my neck out I reckon this is the beginning of the end, we needed to be in a smart formal uniform. Faldo's captaincy will fail and the US will win back the Ryder Cup.

Is the glass half empty today birdieman?

They did look awful, the news described them as looking like pub landlords going on holiday! I liked that description.

I think its usa's cup this time, even though clark and monty were not playing well they would have lifted themselves for this and their names carry alot of weight (!). Poulter is a fine player but who would you fancy in a head to head matchplay between them?

HTL, no I'm in fine fettle this dreich morning.
Look at the bookies odds, they are more or less the same for both sides to win. I just have an inkling USA will win this one, not by much but will win.
Home territory in kentucky and the fact USA are not favourites might just be tipping point for them.
Hope I'm wrong though but I don't think our team is that great other than Padraig, Sergio and Westwood and maybe Karlsson. US team looks average but expect guys like Kim, Holmes, Furyk, Leonard and Perry (yes Perry) to do well.

Ryder cup will stay Stateside this year Faldo was always going to be the worst possible choice of captain. From what I have heard from a reliable source most of the team dont even like him. If you dont like someone how are you going to perform for them???

Also think his wild card picks were a farce.

That said I hope I'm wrong.

Faldo was interesting choice of captain, he has certainly done alot for junior golf etc. Maybe he has mellowed as he has got older but he was always seen as a bit grumpy. Lets see how he pulls this team together, where is seve when you need him?

I have to say I agree that Faldo's captaincy has not inspired me with confidence. I like the man. I have met him a number of times and he has supported a number of charity events I've run and I have nothing but admiration for his golfing achievements.

However his leadership style does not fill me with confidence and I'm not sure his side goes into this as a cohesive team unit. I may be wrong (hopefully) but the way the team dressed yesterday emphasised his maverick ways. I beleive an event like the Ryder Cup demands the formality of a blazer or if that is seen as too outdated now a smart well cut suit

Just a couple of commments regarding the Faldo/team bashing

Give the guy a break, he probably didn't even pick the uniforms.

In management being liked is a bonus, you have to do the job first. How many majors did he win? ever likely they don't like him.(if that is the case)

They are all fantastic golfers at this level, wish I had a fraction of their talent

Finally there is a strong line of thought that we need the septics to win this time to keep them interested in the comp for the future.

what was the difference between what we had on and what Azinger had on??Nothing bar the colour.
I would judge the boys on how they play and not how the look clothes wise and I still think we will win as for the 1st time in a while I think singles wise I would expect a positive outcome so if we are level or ahead come Sunday the cup is ours again.
I am guessing the posts before may have come from middle aged men with a liking of slacks/chinos/shirts/ties/suits??!!

Well i thought they all looked very relaxed and to be honest casual but smart.

Lets not get on Faldos back right away i'm sure every captain has done things' their way,and so they should, people lead in different ways and he will take with him all the experinece of all the other captains he has worked under.

Although a lot of people see him as being single minded perhaps that is what he needs to pass onto the team, because things are going to be hostile out there and the crowd are going to try and get to them, make no bones about it.

Thats when Faldo will come in to his own as a captain when the presure is on and there will be lots of it.

How do you think he has coped in the past winning 6 majors
when even your own country men don't like you.

Over the past few years he has become a better communicator and has shown us his human side thats got to be good!!

So come on boys and girls lets not do an autopsy on a live body what will be will be and if it's a case of us loseing
because of poor captaincy we wont know that until after the event thats the time to take things apart.

Until then give him a break and get behind him and his team.

Middle aged, I hope not. I don't particularly like ties or blazers either but come on this is the Ryder Cup, not a modelling session for the men's section of the Next catalogue! :D

get with the times birdieman ;),as old windy says I would rather be dressed the way they were for a 9 hour flight than with your proposed set up!
Next you'll be wanting them to wear breeches, flat cap bunnets and tweed jackets and use hickorys come Friday! :D

They should have been in suits! They are representing Europe and should dress appropriately.

We do love a chat about fashion on here don’t we! But hate it when H.I.D goes on about it???? Us men are bizarre creatures.

I'm pretty certain every Ryder Cup captain since Gallagher and Jacklin have personally been involved in the Ryder cup apparel so I'm sure Faldo would have been directly involved in this choice.

If as has been hinted it was comfort on the flight fine but I hope the opening ceremony will have the team more suitably attired. I'm not a stickler for suits/blazers but believe there is a place for these in golf. We have to wear them for club matches and so it makes sense that the Ryder cup sets a similar trend

If I remember correctly, Faldo got his ex to design the team 'uniforms'.

as one who might be described as 'beyond middle age' (what is that anyway - it's more a state of mind) I'll go with chinos, but jackets and ties forget it (and suits are for hatches, matches and despatches).

I hope Faldo is single minded and that he can impart some of his steel into the team - I want the sceptics crying after this one.

Quite happy they travel in bare feet with open necks, whatever. Upon representing Europe when they landed they should have donned a jacket and tie and some formal shoes to get off the plane and travel to their Hotel, that's all.

Lets face it, they looked crap!

They should look more like this - www.sun-sentinel.com/media/photo/2006-10/26150608.jpg

not this- http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/golf/7616558.stm
They look more like skateboarders than golfers.
check pic 5 - 'this is particularly offensive'
