Just come up with an interesting point regarding the rules etc, they started talking about belly putters being anchored and should the PGA do something about this. He then mentions the line that people tend to draw on their ball saying its an allignment aid and again shouldnt be allowed but it is widely done.

Thoughts on this regarding the line on the ball? Never really thought about it too much what you think is he right? Do you mark your ball with a line to help puts?

My thoughts are,Faldo cannot face the fact that his game deserted him years ago.He masquerades as a commentator, but basically all he talks about is what others are doing wrong.
Sour grapes imo

Banning it would just lead to ball manufacturers 'lengthening' the lettering on the ball I think ,in order to provide the same effect.

Your personal dislike of Faldo aside, he may have a valid point

If all greens were perfectly flat, and blemish free, then Faldo may have a point, but greens aren't flat and blemish free so how does a line on the ball aid alignment ?
Maybe ball manufacturers should make all balls "seamless" in case the seam is seen as an alignment aid ?

Because the player judges the amount of borrow required and aligns the marking on his ball on the line which he wants his putt to start. I am struggling to understand your comment regarding totally flat greens.

No he does not have a point. The nice people at the R&A have made their decision with regard to a line on a ball.

I tend to use the writing on ball myself rather than drawing a line.

Question:
May a player draw a line on his ball and, when replacing his ball, position the ball so that the line or the trademark on the ball is aimed to indicate the line of play?

Answer: Yes (revised)

Its simple, greens aren't flat, they have humps, hollows, slopes, different levels etc.
I fail to see how a line on the ball being aligned with an imaginary point on the green could be seen as advantageous or against the rules ?
My comment regarding "totally flat greens" was meant to highlight the fact that,MAYBE if the ball couldn't deviate from its intended line, then using an alignment aid would be questionable.

Faldo has been bumping his gums about this for ages, the man is a moronic commentator who tries, and fails, to be controversial. He should accept the fact he is lucky to have got the gig and continue to suck up to the yanks.

As per my previous point, having determined the line on which you want to start your putt off on, it aids your alignment and therefore aids you in starting your putt along the line you have determined you require.

Now clearly thousands of golfers, including those who make serious money from the game, feel it does give them an advantage otherwise they wouldn't do it.

Golfers are well known for playing follow the leader, somebody wins a tournament using a particular club, gadget, etc, and soon everybody jumps on the bandwagon.
I think most of it is placebo, there are far too many variables involved in sinking a putt,so i fail to see how a line drawn on a ball would make a huge difference to the success rate.
I played county scratch league golf for several years, and don't remember seeing anybody using the method, and when i watch golf on TV i haven't noticed many if any balls marked with alignment lines.

Lines are fine , as for Faldo , dont know him so cant comment . Banned the belly and broom handle putters , like the groves on wedges , give them a year then banned them , if you cant put with a standard putter then thats just golf EYG

Banning drawing a line on a golf ball????? :D

The tour pros wouldn't be bothered. They just get their caddies to line them up. Banning that would be a start. But wait....who used to have his caddie line him up .....

Most balls have some sort of line on them that you could use for alignment anyhow!!

What does that tit Faldo want, just numbers on the ball and nothing else?

The man is a grade A jobby.

Faldo has a point.
If the line on the ball doesn't help with alignment why is it there?
It's been deemed legal so it's a moot point but it is an alignment aid.

A total swing rebuild followed by 6 majors and world no.1 status for a few years makes him, in my opinion, worth listening to. He knows golf swings better than just about any player/former player.

I know he seems to rub many people up the wrong way but I don't mind him at all.
