Am I alone in hating fairways and hybrids? Cant hit em for toffee, I just don't hit em as well as my irons, a clean strike with my 5 iron goes 170, the hybrid just goes straight up and is similar length, fairways well I just can't get on with em at all, maybe it's because I'm a shorty, I just don't get any distance out of them at all, again straight into orbit, thinking of going down the 20 & 16 degree iron route.
On my course you don't get many flat lies for this doesn't help the matter but it's not overly long and I hit my driver just fine.

Why not take a lesson on this specific issue? Then follow it up with an on course lesson to deal with the different lies?

If you hit a 5 iron 170, can't see why you wouldn't be able to get good distance out of a hybrid.

If they're going way too high, I'd guess your swing path is a bit too steep, but I could be wrong.

I solved mine by using the same stance and swing as my irons and stopping trying to hit a 3 wood off the deck. It wasn't part of my game plan and every time I tried it I was playing an all or nothing shot.

I do have a steep swing but can't get a decent drill to stop it, my pro is on hols at the moment and don't like the other ones lessons

If you feel you're getting steep, have a look at this video from Chris Ryan, specifically where he talks about the right and wrong way to move pressure in the downswing.

May be of some help.

I'm the other way round. I hit pretty decent shots with my fairway woods and hybrids, but can't hit a long iron to save my life. The longest iron I can manage is a 6-iron.

To be honest Shewy its this very reason that I put my 4 iron back in my bag and have now added a 3 iron too. Just go with what works IMO.

Best thing to do is treat it the same as you would an iron as that's basically what it's a replacement for your '3/4/5 iron' albeit easier to hit apparently, I personally get around the 200-210 mark with my '18*-Adams XTD ti' so I've got a bit of a gap in my irons cos I've no 3/4 iron and my 5i is good for around the 170-180 mark (sometimes a little more if I catch it real good) I reckon you're hitting it on the up which is where the height is coming from, some people (me included) just seem to get massive air no matter what they try, do you hit it well, do you hit it straight or are you just struggling with it in general?

Ps, as a parting comment I also hit my 3-wood well off the deck, once again some people can some can't, sometimes it's not that you're doing anything wrong in particular, it's just the way it is, I can't hit a straight driver for peanuts, hit it long and high yes, straight not a chance.

I've never owned a hybrid club. My Slazenger set was like over a decade old (before they started chucking hybrids in as a matter of course) so it just had a D,3W, 5W and then 3I-SW. I've replaced the irons with a 5-SW set, and I've nicked a 7 wood off my dad to plug the gap. But still no hybrid! Might look into getting one one day, but I quite like the 7 wood at the moment.

Me too, though I (amazingly) did hit a green with my 5-iron on Wednesday from about 170 out. :)

just dropped my 3 wood for a 5 wood. I'm hitting it well both off the deck and off the tee and it's going 10 yards further than my 3 wood did. I'm told that the shorter shaft and additional loft are giving a better face contact and more carry.

I'm a traditionalist and tend to carry 1/3/5 woods.

I do have a 3 and 5 hybrid (old W/S fybrid), but nobody this side of Watford is going to part me with my 4 iron.

a 5 hybrid is almost as hilarious as a 9 wood. I like them for getting over trees... when I'm carrying only 6 or 7 clubs in the winter.

I carry a 5 hybrid. Goes the same distance as my 4 iron, but higher, and its easier to hit out of the rough. I just picked up a 3 hybrid off Junior and will probably ditch the 5 hybrid at some point. I can't stand having 4 head covers in the bag (not including the putter). I tend to hit the 5 hybrid like I would a 5 iron. And the 3, like I would a 3 wood.

Wow... another secret 5 hybrid user. I can't hook it, which is sometimes good, sometimes bad.

I remember playing at Upton and only hitting the 4 iron off the fairway. Still the same club, still the same reliable draw.

Horses for courses, don't fret about it go with what works for you - I personally love woods and hybrids, but have two utility irons for the links/windy days. I'm fortunate to have an adjustable 3wood so often change it depending on whats happening on the course and with myself.

Hit it straight, no problem getting it up lol, looking at steelhead 3&4 irons 18 & 20.5 degrees with same shaft as my irons.

Just a distance issue then, could be lots of things, slow (slowish) swing speed, wrong shaft for you, maybe your not particularly strong, stance width can have an effect on how much effort you can put into your swing or good old fashioned trying to knock the skin off the ball can all 'to a greater or lesser degree' have an effect on distance, even the type of ball your using.

I recently swapped from 'Callaway Warbirds' to 'Srixon soft feel' because I'd changed the shafts in my irons and consequently lost a ton of distance, that and the 'Warbirds' felt like I was hitting musket balls, sounded horrendous, felt even worse.

Get the best out of pro v's, found one on course and it plays long for me, other than that I use chrome soft. Driver speed us 90mph so not quite ready for senior shafts yet, strength not an issue either

I love hitting a 5 wood.. off the deck, tee or out a bunker.. can get it going nicely but with a slight fade

my new 3 wood (16.5 degree) not so great.. needs some work
