In the process of replacing my fairway woods for next season. Currently play G25 3 and 5 wood however I only ever play the 3 wood from the tee as it's not a club I find easy to hit from the deck

I am now going to buy a 17* XR 4 wood but trying to decide to now buy a 7 wood to go along with it which would be 21* or get a 5 wood which is 19*

Unfortunately not going to have the chance to demo a 5 and 7 wood side by side as they don't stock the 7 wood and it would have to be ordered in

Looking at a regular 3 and 5 wood setup there is usually a 3* difference between the clubs so a 2* difference between the 4 and 5 wood isn't hugely different

Does anyone have the 4 and 7 wood setup and what yardage difference do you see between the 2 clubs?

My previous 5 wood I use to play for shots 200 yards out, I am thinking the 4 wood will probably go slightly longer than that now so can't decide whether I should go with a 5 again for the same 200 yards shots or will a 7 wood maybe give me a better gap?

Any help appreciated

5 wood I have no issues with but 3 wood is fine from the tee but I don't find as easy from the ground. Have managed to find XR's brand new for £122 so decided to give them a go

I used to have a 3 wood and 7 wood, with a hybrid filling the gap. I found that I rarely used the 7 wood apart from when I was in the rough, for its ability to get through the grass. I then got a 3HL wood to replace the 3 wood, and swapped the 7 wood out for another hybrid. I now use both clubs more than the previous set up. For me, the 7 wood was too niche, too limiting.

Now that the winter is here my 3W,3H and 5W all seem to be going roughly the same distance, give or take! I seem to carry them all between 180 and 200, with varying degrees of roll out during the summer, but obviously no roll out in the winter.

I carry a 5, 7 and 9 wood adam tight lies (this are very shallow(if that is the right description ie is only about 50-60% size of the ball, so I feel it is easier to get the club on the bottom of the ball on a sweeping hit off the deck or very small orange tee off the tee), I never managed to hit woods of the deck before these)

I do not carry any irons over a 6 iron either.

Summer distances for the 5 wood would be about 185-190 carry, 7 wood 175-180 carry and 9 wood is about 165 carry, can get more if I wish by swinging harder. For information I hit a 7 iron 150 carry.

Love the higher flight on the woods and easier to hit than long irons, that I almost could not hit.

I would not be without my 7 wood.

Thanks for the reply, looking at distance gaps the 7 wood seems to be the way to go. The 4 wood is 17* so the 5 wood at 19* is probably a bit to close so to get a decent gap so the 7 wood at 21* looks good

I carry 3W, 5W and driver (G25) as it covers my gaps nicely and gives me a choice dependant on the lie of the ball. I would personally think a 4 and 5W would be too similar to make a huge difference. I know plenty who carry a "gentlemans persuader" or 7W and most are pretty good with it so I can see the sense in that. Shame you can't try before you order the 7W but try and get on a monitor somewhere and see how far the 4W goes. I think you may want something to bridge the gap

I only carry the one fairway wood, but have no issue in hitting it off the tee of the turf.

My advice, which is the boring, standard forum reply, speak to a pro and book a lesson.

The issue I have with the 3 wood is I can hit it perfectly of the tee but don't use it from the ground so it seems like a bit of a wasted club at the moment. The distance on the XR's is very good so I am thinking if the 4 wood is going as far or even 10 yards less that my current 3 wood it gives me the 7 wood from the 160-180 range

My 7 iron goes around 150 and the G25 5 wood is going around 200 so I have that 50 yard gap at the moment which I am thinking the 7 wood will fit in to

I've carried both a 4/7 and 5/7 set up. I'd say there's about 15-20 yards difference between the 4/5 and the 7. I wouldn't see the point in having a 4 and a 5 when the 7 offers so much more.

7w is a great club for me. My course has a some longish par 4's where I'm 180-190 yards out and want to be able to fly something in high to land softly and I can also choke down to get a really high flying 170 yd shot when I don't fancy taking my 4h. Works almost as well from the rough as the fairway too. It's also a really safe club to use for laying up on a tight par 5 (so long as it isn't windy).

I kind of have a 4w, 7w set up
15° 3 wood adjusted to 16 + a 18° 5 wood adjusted to 20
Effective gap between them, the 16 is plenty long enough and easier to use from the deck than the 15( I find that degree does actually make a difference) and the 20 has a good high flight and still gets out there.

I don't like the 3W off the deck either and only use it off the tee and only about once per round where I play, generally to lay up before one of the hazards. For the fairways I have the G30 2H (17 degrees) and 4H (22 degrees) for the distances over 180 yards (although the stats I am getting off game golf don't seem to appreciate that I want those clubs to go those distances). To be fair, I also rarely hit the 2H as I'm not getting the sweet spot at the moment.

Then I have G30 irons down to 5i. This set-up works pretty well for me, I feel like I have the gaps pretty much covered. G30 PW, SW, UW and LW give me the 14. The Hybrids are the most recent purchase about 6 weeks ago. I don't have much experience with 5W / 7W / 9W and thought Hybrids were the way forward for me. I've some guys hit the 7W well but could never work out how it would differ vastly from my 5i.

Bit like my dilemma at the minute, only use the 3 wood from the tee, and to be honest my 5 wood goes just as far. I'm trialling 19/21 degree hybrids at the moment rather than a 7 wood, 7 woods still has a longish shaft so for me the hybrid is an easier option. You could always choke down on the 4 wood.
Failing that if you like new sticks then I'm hearing great things about the heavenwood.

Ever considered a mini driver?
