You go into a bunker and play out to the back of the green. Rake the bunker and then go and play your next shot. You chip your next shot down the green and it goes back into the bunker that you have just played out of. Is it then a penalty as you have already raked that bunker?

I said that and a couple more agreed but were not absolutely sure. Two of the old guard are adamant that it is a penalty and want proof that it isn't, decision or rule etc. Surely everyone rakes a bunker once they have played out of it. If you didn't and then forgot after you finished the hole the bunkers would be in a right state.

You won’t find it anywhere. You played a shot out of a bunker, you raked it, end of. If you then played your next shot and went back in the same bunker you will play it as if it’s your 1st time in the bunker.

If they believe it’s a penalty they need to provide the ruling under which you are penalised

Sand Smoothed After Ball Played Out of Bunker; Ball Later Returns to Smoothed Area

Q.

After playing his ball out of a greenside bunker, the player smoothes his footprints. He then discovers that his ball is in another bunker on the other side of the green. He plays out of the second bunker and the ball comes to rest in the smoothed area of the first bunker. What is the ruling?

A.

No penalty was incurred. The player did not smooth his footprints in the first bunker while his ball still lay in that bunker - see Exception 2 to Rule 13-4.

If, however, the player failed to extricate his ball from the first bunker with his first stroke and had smoothed his footprints while his ball still lay in that bunker, he would have incurred a penalty if the act of smoothing his footprints had caused a breach of Rule 13-2 with respect to his next stroke.

That's great, thanks a lot.

In the first instance the rule you want to be showing those arguing for a penalty is 13-4 which lists the actions which are prohibited when your ball lies in a hazard. The OP's ball was not in the bunker when he raked it. The Rule is clear that if you play from a hazard and your ball is lying outside it, you can rake as much as you like:

If a ball played from a hazard is outside the hazard after the stroke, the player may smooth sand or soil in the hazard without restriction.
[R 13-4 Exception 2].

The Decision quoted above illustrates a particular application of this rule.

Important here is 13/2 if I have it correct this is improving stance , swing or lie . So if u play a bunker shot and you ball ends up closer to the hole/green there would b no penalty for raking bunker u are still in

Some of the more qualified rule guys may confirm or rubbish this

I think you meant Rule 13-2 not Decision 13/2.

Exception 2 to the Rule is helpful
At any time, the player may smooth sand or soil in a hazard provided this is for the sole purpose of caring for the course and nothing is done to breach Rule 13-2 with respect to his next stroke.
