External Hard Drive and Extra Ram Question.

external hard drive can be bought from many places, amazon, ebuyer, currys and plenty of other, depends what you want, who is the cheapest and if you have any prefence of stores you do or dont buy from

how big you go depends on how much you want to store, have a look at your current hard drive on your pc and see how much you actually use, should give you a decent guide

Extra RAM may speed your pc up, but only if its the memory that is in effect the bottleneck on the current speed (it could be processor, hard drive, internet connection etc)

500GB for £40:

My netbook is an acer aspireone. It has a total capacity of 143GB and Im using about 50GB. I reckon a 500GB on would be loads.

Should extra ram speed up simple surfing and the odd bit of word/excel?

Not on its own no. Would probably be better trying to clear down the programs on the machine, run some virus checks, clear cookies etc and double check you are getting decent internet speeds (that said there are people better qualified on here than me to comment on this sort of issue)

I have taken a load of stuff off it and want to move photos and old stuff onto external drive to see if I can speed it up a bit. Its a handy piece of kit I would use more if it was quicker.

Whats best free virus checker?

Picked up 500gb at pcworld for 40£ this morning. Spoke to them bout buying extra ram there but all kept saying was they would have to get laptop in to see what exact details are??? At a cost of 25£ they would fit t too...

Is there anyway I can find out what ram will be compatible with my acer aspire one?

Can I get this information without opening up machine to find out?

The following info is from right clicking on my computer then properties.

Thanks for the patience... Give me back my acorn electron anyday, things were a lot simpler back then lol

It runs windows xp , intel (R) Atom ( TM), CPU N 270 @ 1.60 ghz, 1.32 ghz, 1.48 gb of ram.

Memory: I've used www.crucial.com/uk. They are excellent and you will get what is compatible.

Used them at home and at work with no issues..

They have a program that will do a scan of your PC and tell you what it currently is and what additional it can accept.

Great will try that later after I get a soaking in the medal

Got my model and type and I am recommended this....

Anyone know the equivalent I could get from pc world?

When I was in this morning they couldn't help as they didn't know exact model etc does anyone know where I can find the exact details I need to take to pcw so hey can get me the correct bit?

There's a risk you won't get like for like from PCW, even when the PCW box says you should. Been down that road before and the RAM just didn't work. Switched to Crucial and no probs since.

Just picked up on this thread
XP should run fine with 1.5 Gb of RAM
Upping the RAM can be a problem with netbooks as the ram is often soldered into the motherboard
Suggest you remove the access flaps on the back and eyeball the ram sockets before you do anything.

Sadly the real problem is the Atom CPU , it is only good for very basic operations

It is a fact that 90% of my customers who bought netbooks stop using them after less than 18 months as they are just too slow

I suspect that even if you do up the ram you will see little noticeable difference.
