See that Andrew Johnston has been successful in gaining his PGA card for next year.

About sums it up for the European Tour; find a popular personality who could help promote the Tour to a wider audience and, before you know it, he's off to the States for the bigger purses, better facilities and bigger crowds.

Must be soul-destroying for Keith Pelly and his staff.

Don't see the problem myself. I don't think the European Tour found him and his personality. It's more like Beef was "found" by the people and the folk in the US, and europe, love him. Why not go out there and earn some cash and have some decent interraction with the crowd ?

You give the reasons why yourself, pretty simple decision really.

Best of luck to him. He's been a breath of fresh air this season, so, I hope it works out for him over there. he'll have a cult following over there :)

True, the reasons are obvious but it does not help with the fact that all of the other world tours have now become feeder tours for the PGA. Very hard to actually see any of the big names in golf playing in Europe now and that is a pity and can only harm the development of the game in the long run.
Fact is that the PGA Tour has 'won' in that it has all of the big names on board and any new talent looking to join. On that basis, there is not even an argument for a global tour now (except maybe some very big money events in the middle east and china).

Beef said on Twitter he's not going anywhere and will continue to play on the European Tour. Don't blame him for seeking out that PGA Tour card though, the money is so much better, and he's so popular there.

I would imagine that the old school Jacket and tie, knee length socks brigade might struggle to embrace the beef but to the layman the bloke's an absolute breath of fresh air !!! I hope his game keeps improving as i'd love to see him at Augusta in April.

]is there anyone else on here that just doesn't particularly warm to him as a golfer?

It's hard to see golf as a sport when some of the players are the larger type of athlete. I'm not keen on beards either, or dodgy teeth, but he seems like a nice enough guy.

He seems like a great guy, but i do wonder if its an act. also, is he actually that good (in relative terms?)... i think he'll disappear to the lower echelons of the european tour fairly soon

I haven't suggested that he should not go and I fully understand why players do migrate.

My comment was more about the Tour's difficulty in retaining talent this side of the Atlantic. Of this year's Ryder Cup team half are more regular competitors in America than on the European Tour and I find that disappointing.

I appreciate that with WGC's as well as the Majors it is now more of a global game and fewer ET events are actually held in Europe For the golf fan it is disappointing to see that, for the top boys at least, there now seems to be only "one game in town".

Yeah

Nice lad i suppose

But id leave a full pint sat in the pub if he pulled up the chair next to me.

Not a huge fan of the whole "love me, love me im thick" personas personally

Irritating is one word

I like the bloke, never met him so I suppose I like what I see. In a world of monotone, focused golfers he looks like he is living the dream and enjoying every moment of it. What is wrong with that? I suspect he will go to the US on the promise of lots of endorsements as they will love him out there.

In terms of his play, golf is brutal. If he is not good enough then he will disappear but I for one hope that is not the case.

I agree with the OP, it is tough on the ET and partly why the Ryder Cup places are given how they are. There is no real answer other than to keep pushing the ET and make it different and exciting. I do wonder how long the US tour will keep handing out cards to non US players. Are they not blocking the progress of their own by filling their tour with non US players? Fine for eilite players but I think it has become a bit like the PL with average pro golfers over there now rather than only the best. Maybe if the US tour starts being stricter then we will keep more European players here for longer.

He's said he'll split his time between Europe while he has the exemption and the US. Personally I fear that the travel and the whole "Beef" circus will distract and he'll struggle until he picks on tour to settle on, inevitably the PGA

Just based on what I see on the wee screen I like the guy (I'm not seeing the 'thick' stuff though)

His comments as he waited to see if he'd won at valderrama were great and I caught a piece on a range he'd done 'pre-beard' and his crib footage was good too. Clearly a family guy that's a bit surprised by the positive reaction to him

Whether he has 2 years or 20 on the big tours I hope he makes the most of his time in the spotlight

My son played the Grove recently and Beef was there practicing putting, and by all accounts he came across as extremely amiable.
