We're moving south and top of the options is the Exeter area. (It's 30 years since I was last in that area) We both play golf (he off 18, she off 26) but apart from the game the golf club has always been the heart of our social life. There's Exeter Golf Club and Dawlish Warren GC. I have formed the view from google and google earth that Exeter GC is also a gym and a spa i.e. it looks like a business and I see that Dawlish is surrounded by caravans? I have also formed the view that there's a LOT of new build housing (Redrow, Barrats, Bloors etc.,) going on. Any local information would be appreciated.

East Devon GC in Budleigh an option or too far?

Holiday in that area and played it a couple of times, lovely course and seems to be a traditional members club.

Not a local so can't help more than that!! Envious of you moving down that way though, love it down there

Brother lives in Exeter and it's booming re building work, took him ages to get a builder to do work on his house.
He and his wife play at Downes Credition on the NW side of the city but not every ones cup of tea with it's 6 par 3 's .
The road out to Dawlish is/can be very slow at busy times so would be worth considering depending on where you settle.

I can also recommend East Devon GC, very enjoyable track if it is within distance for you.

I live in a small village just outside exeter.

Exeter G&CC is a nice course, but from what I hear from few friends who are members .. its quite hard to get a tee time at weekends. they have a lot of comps that use a lot of them!

Budleigh (East Devon) is nice, picturesque and Gorsey!

Dawlish is typical links, but as its on a spit/peninsula. its a windy place!

Sidmouth, if you like wonky hills!

I have recently joined Honiton as my club has taken the decision to close its doors march 2017.
Its a lovely place, nice course (quite traditional .. established in 1896 i think)

Depending on your travel requirements, there is
Tiverton (15 miles or so)
Okehampton (20 miles?)
Exminster (5 miles) 9 hole course with 18 tees (good practice facilities though)

if you need any info ref the local area, welcome to PM me

Thanks for all the helpful replies. We will be going down there at some point to reconnoitre but there's no substitution for local knowledge and all info is gratefully received.

About 8 miles west of Exeter is the Teign Valley course
We had scout camp next to it this year and kept looking over the river at it salivating :)
Worth investigating

I played that course. Some of it is a bit hilly and I remember there was a par 5 that someone had a hole in one on.

Most of the courses in the area feature on crossfield or buzza course vlogs. Might be worth going to YouTube and seeing if any particularly take your fancy.

Can recommend Dainton, it`s hilly but some of the views are worth the climb, oh, and it has a gym/fitness suite on site.
