There has been a bit of a rush on afternoon tee times for the Clitheroe Historic Golf Open on 18th July, slots still available but I'd get your name down quick to avoid disappointment!

See link below for further details:

I've got one set of woods and blades for you to consider this evening, don't be fooled by the Dunlop brand, there was a time when it meant quality clubs. This set of Bob Charles are top value at £14.99, collection only from Hyde. (And check out those ferrules on the irons, delightful!)

They would do for me but I am not too familiar with Ebay, if you click buy it now, is that it or can you still be outbid.

As GG26 says, once you've confirmed the buy-it-now then you've won them.

If you're only buying them for this competition then I'll buy them off you afterwards for £15 as I like the look of them but they're too far for me to collect.

Sounds like a plan!

I have got the clubs, they are as good as they looked on Ebay,

The guy also asked if I wanted to buy a bag he had on Ebay for £15, I said I had loads of bags and he said well you might as well take it anyway, he also stuck in some old Dunlop 65s still in their wrappers but strangely he said he wanted to keep the wood head covers.

Oh and there is no putter so it would be great if I could borrow one.

Hope you don't want to keep them now! But I'll understand if you do. :D
I'll buy the Dunlop 65s off you as well if you don't want them.

What sort of putter would you like to borrow?
Choose from the following:
  • A couple of hickory shafted blades, not the easiest to use.
  • A solid steel shafted blade, I quite like this one.
  • Or my choice for you would be the Joyce Wethered blade, probably 1930s. Not sure how deep your interest in golf history goes but Joyce Wethered was the lady golfer of the 1920s/30s and Bobby Jones considered her one of the greatest players ever, male or female.

I was assuming that the D65s were the smaller ball, they look it even though they are wrapped.

I do know who Joyce Wethered is as it happens.

I think I will wait to see how much I enjoy played with the old clubs but I suspect I will still be happy to let them go.

An interesting find in the golf bag was a members bag tag for 1977/8 from Forest of Arden Golf Club.

The 65s have been around for many years, they were introduced to celebrate Henry Cotton's round of 65 in his Open win of 1934, small and large size versions have been produced.

Do you have a preference in the putter choices?

I decided I needed to have a go with these club before Clitheroe so I played just 3 holes with them this evening. I actually hit them better than I expected, although I need more practice to get the tee height correct for the driver. At least I don't feel I will make a complete fool of myself with them.

Nice work Louise! Most people will be surprised that old clubs aren't as hard to hit as they thought, we've just been brainwashed into thinking that anything more than 10 years old is going to be impossible to hit and will ruin our game.

Tee height for the driver needs to be quite a bit lower than a current driver. The face isn't as high and the sweet spot on a wooden wood is generally just above centre rather than near the top.
A tee height of around 3/4" to 1" will give you a ball centre height of around 1 1/2" to 1 3/4", this will be a good start point and it's then a matter of trial and error until you find the height that suits where your swing arc is at contact.

Also probably worth playing with the ball position, not so far out to the left foot as for modern drivers.
And a soft ball will also help, Srixon Soft Feel, Callaway SuperSoft or similar.
