There is probably a logical reason for the answer to this , but as we all have exact handicaps why dont we use exact instead of playing handicaps to attain our exact score ..

This came up as to why Exact is not used in countbacks instead back 9/6/3 etc

Just curious

Because you can't play a fraction of a shot?

In some comps at my place (e.g. Texas Scrambles) the exact handicap of all players in a team is aggregated and quartered to determine the team deduction to be applied to get the nett score - the deduction being the exact quarter of the aggregate and not rounded.

Probably a fair point however I feel like if I lose on countback I would accept it was deserved. If I lost by 0.2 then that would get to me.

Also, imagine getting 0.1 shots in matchplay!

Sorry should have been clearer i did mean in stroke play

It came up at a scratch &b nett Cup comp ,

was just curious as to why ?

Good point, I think using exact would be a fairer way of deciding that the rather arbitrary count back they use now, e.g. why use the back 9 instead of the front 9??

The simple answer is that we use playing handicaps to play - so you can't bring the exact handicap back into the equation for the purposes of determining a count back winner.

As to why we use playing handicaps; you have had most of the answers already.

I suspect that exact handicap index will meet course and bogey indexes before rounding within the next 5 years - but it will then be rounded to a playing handicap and you are back where you started on this particular issue!

I would have thought the answer is obvious. Exact handicap favours the higher player every time ie. 5.5 versus 6.4

Hardly fair to automatically reward the less skilled player is it?

Golf can be complicated enough sometimes with all that stuff if we start dealing in fractions of a shots I think would just be getting too silly, well for me anyway

Whilst I have an overall sympathy with this view I can also see the inherent simplicity in settling countbacks by reference to exact handicap (if possible of course!)

Like you have to worry about countbacks

Interesting question though and it does make you wonder what the point of keeping track of these odd .somethings when surely the system will just say 12 anyway and then 13 when you get there

But lower player can get the advantage when comp handicaps are not the same e.g. 5.4 vs 6.5 and their nett scores are equal.
