Ok so I was slightly bored and decided to work out my own stroke index based on my scores in comps this season. I basically added up all my scores on each individual hole and came up with an average score per hole and then ranked the difference between this average and the par for the hole.

Nothing particularly startling stood out as lots of holes were pretty similar to the official SI but the biggest difference was SI 1 which was actually SI 6 for me.

Anyway I've decided to use the info to perhaps target the holes I struggle on and try using a different tactic to get the average score down on those holes. Perhaps taking an iron off the tee or maybe not going for the green from distance and laying up instead.

Apologies if that has just bored everyone to death.

it's a good exercise to do for your self but a courses SI is not based upon the difficulty of the hole it's based upon match play.

I wasn't bored. That is quite interesting... might do the same with my scorecards. What do you do if the difference between the average and the par is the same across multiple holes? How do you determine which is the higher SI?

I had a few like that so decided to give the higher SI to the hole that had the worst over par score on it over the season so if 2 par 4's came out at an average of 4.3 id look to see which one had the highest individual score on it (say a 9) and then ranked it the harder of the 2. Not very scientific I know.

I always do it as it can highlight a hole where course management is poor and it plays more difficult for me than it should. I find it useful.

It is a good exercise to do, to identify troublesome holes or when you actually think
About it maybe one particular type of shot?
As mentioned difficulty doesn't necessarily come into it but, quite often it does.

Use HDID as it gives the stats on each hole and ranks them in how everyone did on that particular comp, then cross ref with your score of the day. I know it's not personalised to you, but it gives how the field played them holes.

If you go on Howdidido, in the my golf section it gives you all your competition scores on each hole and your average for each hole on the top line, which is effectively what you are calculating here.
It is a very good excercise. You may be surprised by which holes you find the most difficult, probably highlighting poor course management. It makes you think how you might play that hole differently, maybe an iron off the tee or lay up instead of going into a green surrounded by trouble.

I did this last night (alternative to counting sheep) and was a bit surprised by the results.

There are a few holes where I really need to up the concentration, especially early in the round :(

Just done this now, some quite interesting results. Stroke 1 is still the hardest, averaging over a bogey since I joined the club. The easiest for me are two par 4's towards the end which are a 3 iron and a wedge of some description if you're trying to put a score together.

The SI 14, 15 & 16 for me are our three par 5's, all of which I can get up in two. Averaging 5.1-5.2 on these which is pleasing considering I had quite a few 7's when I first joined the club last year.

The SI 2 & 3 for me are easy holes which I shouldn't drop shots on. Both are less than 400 yards but have a second shot over water, with the water also coming into play if you hit one left off the tee. If I can work on just getting through these with a par, it looks like it should really help my scores!

More things to work on over the winter!

Just done it myself, using the average over par for the year divided by the par. Interestingly my SI 1-3 are all par 3s which are actually SI 14, 15 & 17. my SI 15-18 are all par 5s.
