Eusebio R.I.P.

Saw him play for Benfica against Hibs in the 1960's and he was Fab u lous.
He was the first 'African' footballer to play in Scotland and the story going around before the game was that he played in bare feet.
Days of innocence eh!

Really sad to hear this.

I remember watching him score 5 goals in a European game once.

A real "Sportsman".

One of the greatest ever footballers and more importantly, a true sportsman. This was never better illustrated when he applauded Alex Stepney for his great save from Eusebio himself in the 1968 European Cup Final.
A true legend. RIP.

Correction it was against Hearts.
Benfica were 2-0 up and Eusebio collected the ball deep in his own half.
He beat about four Hearts players and feinted a shot from the edge of the penalty area which had Gordon Marshall starting to dive.
He then turned and had a shot blocked by some desperate defending....pure class.

He and his strike partner really impressed me as a teenaged centre-forward (striker for the younger readers).

Power, pace, two feet, great in the air and fantastic temperament; kicked to pieces in the '66 World Cup and yet was still top scorer. A real sportsman as well.

RIP Black Pearl.
