Europes ryder cup go back to 2 wildcard picks for next year.

I think thats right, players work hard all year getting into the team automatically, and should be rewarded. It makes the captains job a little easier, and players qualify on merit

The only reservation I have is taking the top 5 from the rankings. Is this before or after the Top 5 from the RTD?
Either way there's a chance that just because someone's, say, 25th in the world rankings, it doesn't mean they're playing well. Look at Sergio.......
Using World events as a mini order of merit at least means you have guys on form.

Qualification for The 2012 European Ryder Cup Team will be selected employing the following criteria:
(a) The leading five players on The Ryder Cup European Points List (1) at the conclusion of the 2012 Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles. In the event of a tie (equal number of points accumulated), placings will be decided by the player with the higher ranking on The 2012 Race to Dubai at the conclusion of the Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles.
(b) The leading five players, not otherwise qualified (having selected the five players from The Ryder Cup European Points List) from The Ryder Cup World Points List (2) at the conclusion of the 2012 Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles. In the event of a tie (equal number of points accumulated), placings will be decided by the player with the higher ranking on the Official World Golf Ranking.
(c) The Captain, José Maria Olazábal, will choose the remaining two players following the conclusion of the 2012 Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles.

(1) The Ryder Cup European Points List will comprise points (1 point = 1 Euro) earned by a European Tour Member from all officially sanctioned European Tour tournaments on The European Tour Race to Dubai from September 1, 2011 until the conclusion of the Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles in 2012.
(2) The Ryder Cup World Points List will comprise World Ranking Points won by a European Tour Member from each tournament in which he participates from September 1, 2011 until the conclusion of the Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles in 2012. World Ranking Points are allocated to all officially sanctioned tournaments (on any Federated Tour) by the Official World Golf Ranking and are allocated according to the Event Rating of the tournament.

Isn't that what they used last time - although only 4 from the world list?
I read it, in the article, that the top 5 in the world rankings + the top 5 from the European tour money list qualify.

That's not the same thing.

Looks to me like all they've changed is the number of picks.
And I'm ok with that.

Well one things for sure, the players will know exactly what they need to do to qualify. Perhaps this time, some of them won't be too smug when it comes to qualifying as a wild card.

Play well through the qualifying period and you'll be okay. Don't rely on a wildcard ;)

We'll definitely need to have a very strong team out there next time.

I think it's stupid as you should be able to pick more guys who are on form in the few months running up to it. Some events pay more than others so in a way it's already rigged.

I think there is enough strength in depth to privide a pretty good team however it's devised. There were a few good players that missed out last time but at least everyone has a good idea of what they need to do to make the team

Its slightly different. The top 5 from Rankings used to be first, now its top 5 from RTD first. It makes quite a change i think.

Last year if you qualified in the World rankings and you were also in top5 from RTD they picked the next person in the RTD list. This is how Simon Dyson (I think) nearly got in. Usually 2 or 3 feature in the top 5 in both lists

By doing it the other way round you would pick the next guy from world rankings. This is more likely to be a Rose, Donald or Casey who play more in the USA and do not feature so much in the RTD rankings.
