European Golfer of the Year Award

Kaymer pipped McDowell in the Race to Dubai, but sealing the Ryder Cup for Europe will have played a massive part in the decision as well.

Thoroughly deserved by both of them.

Agree that both deserve it but the award is the European Golfer of the Year, not the European Golfers of the Year.

Bit of a cop out sharing the award, what if next year there are 3 golfers who have excelled? Or 4?

Sometimes you have to make tough decisions to retain the respectability of the award. Maybe this decision has taken a little of the shine off for the winners and for future recipients.

I think it's a fair shout splitting it. If it hadn't been Ryder Cup year Kaymer would have squeaked it but G-Mac had a much better RC. Personally I think it's a good shout and reflects the strength on tour, though what they would have done if Westwood had won at Augusta....

i was one of the 8 man judging panel on this and believe me the deliberation went on for hours. The voting was split 4/4 and despite very impassionated speeches for GMac and Kaymer none of the 8 panel memebers were for turning
Despite the fact my man didnt win i think was the right result on balance

Well there lies the problem Mike: don't have even numbers on a panel ;)

Seriously unenviable task this one but on balance I think you got it right

Is the correct answer.

I'm interested to know if any influence came from McDowell beating Tiger the other day?, when was the decision made?

Should get wee Louis Walsh in next time for the deciding vote, he knows a good swinger when he sees one.

I think Mike was angling for overnight stay in a hotel a la jury service. If there are 8 on the panel and it is split 4/4 then a fair result although common sense says have an odd number on the panel. Personally I'd have gone for McDowell but that's just my own opinion

Next time, go for a nine man panel?

Or seven.......

Definatley think an odd panel would have been a better choice!

Very tough to make a selection though, both 4 wins this season with a major,I would have went for Mcdowell, flying the flag in america too last weekend, but both had 6 top tens, mcdowell 3 wins on the et (4th win was on pga tour) but Kaymer had 4 inc their respective majors, what a tough choice!
Another poss factoe for me is Mcdowell has climbed 32 places since 2009 to Kaymers 10.

:)

It's good that we can celebrate the achievements of two of our top Golfers in this way but agree the panel should be uneven numbers. After all it is the European GOLFER of the year award.

I hope it does not happen next year and there is an outright winner.

an even panel @ 8 is pretty comman in the world of awards(music industry etc) its to try and stop shock winners just edging it by one strange vote and to keep the awards beyond repute.

they are really looking for a minimum of 60/40 split of course.

fair result this time though.
