Now, everyone knows that they should practise their short game more and, probably, like most, I spend most of my time smashing drivers and banging away with the irons down at the driving range.

Well, I decided to go nuts and just take my wedges down to the range and leave everything else behind. Had a good session (100 balls) pitching to 100, 90, 80, 70, 60 etc and chipping.

And guess what?

It worked.

Saved par on the first with a pitch to four feet. Crap tee shot, a hack out, pitch to two feet and par on the second. Two birdies following good 100 yard shots later on after capitalising on good drives. Two up and downs from chips and a chip in.

Playing partners complimenting me on my chipping and pitching.

Now, I'm just wondering why I haven't done this before. :D

Done similar myself this morning with 100 balls to try and get used to my irons. It worked a treat too and then they opened the course and had a round and played great with the irons I was flogging last week. Nearly equalled my best score of 96(97) and could have taken 10 off with the amount of putts I missed from inside 3 feet.It goes to show that a great drive doesnt make the scores, it's the irons and short game.

Well done on the result, remember this nugget of wisdom though.
One grain of wheat doesnt make a harvest.
One practice session means nothing over a season, keep at it and it will pay dividends in the long run. :)

Very true.

It was frustrating as I can't believe that I've never done it before. I was always focussed on getting my swing right with longer clubs. The other benefit of it was that I was getting more confident with my swing as the results were good during practice with my wedges.

300yrd drive=1 shot and no score, 60yrd accurate pitch=1 shot and maybe a birdie/eagle. Both are golf shots,it's the shorter ones that can seriously reduce your handicap.

I say well done to you for investing some time on something and getting a return. :)

From time to time, I do this sort of thing and it can pay dividends. The trouble I find is getting good enough to turn 3 shots into 2, but that's a different thread.

Nice :)

The only issue was that I was using range balls so getting the distances spot on was impossible. Looks like we won't be able to play tomorrow with the weather, if so, I'll be off to the range again.

It great to see a return on your investment and well done for seeing the wisdom in sharpening up from 100 yards. I tend to do a lot of work on the practice ground throughout the summer honing my approaches but at the moment its under several inches of water. THe range I tend to go to doesn't have great options for picking a target short of 100 yards (great after that distance). I've a pitching (<100 yards) lesson coming up so hopefully a refresher on distance control and drier weather means I can put some hard work in

a) Good wedge play is fine if you keep missing greens because your iron play sucks :p

b) If you don't hit it far enough off the tee you're probably not going to be hitting a wedge into the green in the first place

Putting is the quickest save on h/cap bar none - best to spend some time practicing that, as well as your wedges :)

IMO short hitters always have better short games han long hitters simply because they have to use it more i.e they get more on course practise as well as the practise they get in on the range etc whereas the long hitter realises how far they can hit and when they get on the range all they try and do is hit is a far as possible so the short game seizes up.

Have you installed a webcam at my course?....you must have seen me play :)
