Am I right in thinking that the EU STILL moves the whole circus from Brussels to Strasbourg every month for 4 days. At the end of the 4 days, it's all moved back again.........all at the tax payers expense ?
I hate to think how much that costs

Yup they still do Bob, just before the Brexit election there was a programme about how the EU was run, it went through the Strasborg move. it was watching that programme that confirmed I was voting the right way.
Cannot remember which part of the programme it was but Thatcher who was more than happy to be in Europe went ballistic about passing laws onto the EU

Probably about the same as the UK supporting the monarchy.

You may be surprised to know that the taxes paid by the Royals exceeds the money paid to them by the Treasury. But don't let facts get in the way of an opportunity for a dig.

The Royals pay more than £400m in tax? Really.

Money brought in from tourism can never properly be accounted for. Do people really visit London to see the Queen or Prince Charles or do they go to see the sites? People go to Paris to see the sites, no royalty left there. Tourists would still come to London, Royal family or not.

Not even close.

But as the 2015 annual report showed that the royal family cost the UK £35.7 million that year (or 56p per person) they don't need to pay £400 million in tax. This will rise to £46 million next year. And this is funded in part by a percentage of profits from Crown Estate revenue which last year totalled £304 million. I'm far from being a royalist but the maths seem to indicate that it's not a bad deal for the country.

The old Civil List was abolished several years ago, to be replaced by the Sovereign Grant. The SG includes monies made by the Crown Estates, on top of the monies paid to the Royal Household.

In 2016 the SG showed a surplus of £210 million. The Crown has immunity from income tax but chooses to pass on the surplus AND to pay various taxes, including income tax on earned income from the private businesses it runs within the Crown Estates, which are public owned.

The annual payments made to the Queen/Prince Charles etc are more than covered by what is returned back to the Treasury.

When the Queen asked for £150 million(?) for repairs to Buckingham Palace she was basically asking her landlord to repair the house she is a tenant in.

The anti-Royalists use half truths to say the Royals cost the UK XX million when, in reality, they return more(through choice) than they receive.

Can I suggest more come here to see Her Majesty's houses than go to Brussels to see Mr. Junckers' office…… ;)

I reckon the EU must've 'wasted' millions in Cornwall as they still voted out ;)...

EU has no money at all. Not a single penny. It ours...given back to us, net of what they waste... eg as in the original post.

Back at the OP... it costs millions to move, and it pointless. AND - there is huge fraud attached to the scams involved in the move...eg charging for lorries that don't go there.

Nice try to divert attention to the Monarchy.... nothing to do with the EU....

Yes, they still have two EU Parliament buildings, one in Brussels and one in Strasbourg (presumably to keep the French happy). However is it really such a bad thing? If our Parliament alternated between London and (say) Manchester, then the Northerners might feel a bit more represented. 😀

Do you have some facts to support your £700m figure or is it just made up.
How do you measure PR.

The British Tourism Agency figures are that tourism linked to the Royal Family brings in £500 million per year drawing visitors to the Tower of London, Buckingham Palace, Windsor Castle etc. Add profits from the Crown Estate (£304 million last year) and that's over £800 million.

Next year the Royal Family will get £46 million from the public purse - on top of which you have to add security costs covered by the Met but I'm not sure that would make it the quoted £400 million per year it's claimed they cost us.

And what happens to the parliament building in Strasbourg for the other 317 days per year?
