Just wondering if some one could tell me if we did the right thing in this situation,

on sunday I went round my new course and there was a fellow player on the academy membership teeing off just before me, she waited on the 2nd tee and said I could go ahead but I asked if she wanted to go round together. It was fairly quiet and the people in front moved off out of sight and by the 8th a 2 ball behind us started catching up, I'm not sure if they slowed their play down as they didn't really catch right up until about the 13th which was a par 3 and as we got to the green and we're finishing off they got to the tee, I've read the proper etiquette is to mark our balls and let them tee off, we only had 1 putt left so we carried on. By the next we were out of distance by the time they got to the next tee I think they lost a ball here and so fell behind a little. On the 17th again we were in the green and they were waiting on the fairway to hit on. We finished up and moved on then didn't see them on the 18th.

My my question really is if you are on the green should you mark your ball and let a group behind you take their shots? I'm guessing if you do this you would then let them tee off on the next first? The guys behind didn't seem bothered and we're having a laugh with us as we past on some of the holes when their tee shot had landed on our fairway.

Thanks

Sometimes you get par 3 holes or driveable par 4's that are designated 'call up' holes but as you only had 1 putt left to finish the hole you did the right thing by keeping play moving. Regarding normal play, you shouldn't be inviting the game behind to play up to the green before you putt out unless you are calling them through. All that does is bunch the field right up.

Sounds like you did the right thing. I only tend to let people through on par 3s if they make it to the tee before I make it to my ball on the green. Or have missed the green with my tee shot. Had a group let me through on our 2nd hole (par 3) the other week, the 1st is a par 5. So God only knows how we caught them up. We tee'd off on the 2nd and he proceeded to play onto the green (or try to) chipping 4 balls consecutively into the lake surrounding the green. Decided to give up and move onto the 3rd as we were putting out on the 2nd then never let us through all day! Quality behaviour. Resulted in one of the slowest rounds iv ever played at 5 hours 10 mins

Yeah there really needs to be a better reason to let them shoot at you on par 3 green other than 'they got to the tee while you were on the green'
Like a club rule, a lost ball search, a.n other delay that's occurred on the hole that will slow you down completing the hole

Don't forget if you call them up they'll be shooting a ball in your direction and you're in range!

If you're just being caught through general play then best way is to tee off yourselves, wait on the tee box and let them tee off too, then all walk together and they putt out first and off they go while your group putts (in your scenario it sounds like they were still just a bit too far behind to be played through)

Its nice to be aware of other groups needing to get through but timing & method needs to be appropriate otherwise it can cause more harm than good (i.e what about the group behind them that might now be on the same par 3 tee before you've eventually putted out after letting the first group through, its no different to the first group, you'll be stuck there all day ;))

I wouldn't have let them through on the par 3, as a general rule let people through if there is space in front of you for them to go into.

Letting them through on the par 3 would slow both rounds down unnecessarily

Don't think you actually did anything wrong at all. Once you have cleared the par 3, you will gain some distance from them on the next hole. One thing that can happen is that some players feel under pressure when there are players behind, this causes them to rush shots. Drives, pitches, putts etc. Play your normal shots. Other wise trying to rush may actually take longer.

TBH if you were going to let them though then call them up, but if not its would just slow things down more.

if they were waiting on the next tee while you were still to play your 2nd i would have let them though there.
