Just spent an enjoyable few minutes going through the top 10 on the GM article (on the right hand side)

No wrong answer since its a popularity contest but I'd have put Jensen then Hend ahead of Rory

Both Jensen and Hend holed theirs making them better shots & Jensen's was his 1st shot after a weather delay putting him just ahead of Hend (although Rory's was at a much more crucial time in the round which gives a bit of balance back in his favour and can easily see why folks would vote for that)

Anyway just wanted to highlight the article if folks haven't seen it

Cheers GM

Had this debate with a couple of players on a round, I think the 18th Final day part makes it the best shot. They were the other way around - there argument being its a single shot rather than circumstance.

For me circumstance is all-important, do this in round 2 when you're 10 behind and it's a great shot, do it for the win and it's epic.

Henrik Stenson's shot at The Open, par 3, 17th hole. All that pressure, he and Phil going toe to toe. Absolutely nailed it, closed out the tournament with that shot. Best shot of the year for me. Circumstance is everything.

Edited - Just checked the article, this was not even in the top 10. Wow. Just wow.

Might be because The Open is not an ET event?

That being the case, I'd go for one of Rory's fairway woods on the Sunday at the Irish open. I actually prefer the one on 16, as he was behind at that point, and there was a lot of trouble all round the green. By 18 he'd won it, and there was less to go wrong.

I strongly disagree with this.

We all know that holing a shot has more to do with luck than skill, so just because a shot goes into the hole doesn't make it a great shot.

There are some hole-outs/aces in the top 10 where the ball would have gone 10+ feet past the hole if it hadn't hit the hole/flag, so if they had been 1 inch further to the left/right noone would ever have talked about that shots again. And from 150+ yards, 1 inch right or left is luck and nothing else, and luck shouldn't be the only difference between a candidate for "shot of the year" and a shot noone cares about anymore once the players leave the green.

Surely it is a European Tour event?

Nope. It is run by the r&a. The ETrecognises it for race to dubai and rankings stuff. Just like it does the other three majors (which it also doesn't run). Also counts towards the number of events the players have to play (as do the other majors and wgc events).
