Hi

does anyone whether you can get membership for around £700 in Essex? Ideally brentwood or chelmsford area

thanks

Think theres quite a lot of public courses/munis in Essex that will do season tickets at that price or under and then the associated club will be 80-100 quid or so on top

Not sure on the prices but have a look at South Essex, one of the best public access courses you will play.
Unfortunately just noticed it's run by Crown Golf, so expect it to be a bit shambolic, especially as it's 27 holes which can be a nightmare if not run properly.

Playgolf in Colchester can do that for you , it's a bit of a trek but it is Chelmsford side and just off of the A12. If not try Bunsay Downs, it's a 9 holer but decent nonetheless. I'm guessing Regiment Way would be in that ball park too but that's also a 9 holer.

I would have thought you are looking at a the cheaper courses ro 9 hole course if you are looking for a 7 (?)day membership at the price. As 7 day cost about £700 at cheaper courses 10-15 years ago when I was member.

So probably have a look at :-

Hartswood (short but quite pleasant)
Burnham (used to be a member here, some great holes and very friendly)
9 hole Regiment way (little channels I think it is called now)
9 Hole Bunsay downes [short but nice] but does have a cracking 9 hole Par 3 course as well./
Maybe Hylands golf course(only ever paid a few times there not sure on prices)?
Maybe 9 hole Maldon (never played there)
South Essex(stonyhill) nice three loops of 9, but would expect this to be above 700 now
Forrester park (not sure on prices but played there quite a bit)

Hopefully that helps, best of luck

Ive played there a few times, nice enough course and you get to play other crwon courses of which there are a few and some are quite nice.

Forresters is north of £900 now i believe, Burnham on Crouch is in that ball park too. I think the 9 holers will be your only option in your price range unless you're prepared to travel a little further. If cash wasn't an option join Chelmsford or Thorndon Park as they're two of the top 3 in the County in my opinion .

chelmsford or Thorndon Park .

Oh my I love the layout of thorndon and to imagine that thorndon hall was once the clubhouse. Just love the course, probably the course I enjoy the most playing.

Hate to imagine the membership cost tho, as the society days I have had there are a lot of money(in particular Thorndon). Chelmsford does have a main line train line running next to it(I didn't like that personally)

That said the condition of the Thorndon course I have always felt is not quite what it should be and the members at both are a little be stuffy(and I was with a groups of accountants, so that is saying something).

thanks for all the replies.

This will be the first club I have joined and cost is a big thing to me. Plus at the moment I will only be playing once a week with the odd evening when I can get away from work.

According to their website Bunsay Golf Club offers 7 day membership for £500 so that might be a really good starting point for me although it is aimed at the pay and play market and is only a full 9 course.

I would be a 28 handicap at the moment so it may help to start little and work up....

MrC, Bunsay is the best of the options available by far but by no means is a pushover. I think you'll really enjoy it over there and as you get better and improve then the Warren will be the next logical step as they're next to each other . Good luck with it.

Maldon is expensive for a 9 hole course IMO at £699 for 7 days. Not played it so can't comment on the course but seems quite steep.

I was a member at Forrester Park for 4 years, at £910 for full 9 days, it's a rip off considering you can join my place with a friend for less and ours is arguably a much more enjoyable and better kept golf course and also includes the health and fitness side.

Burnham at £825 for full 7 day is reasonably good value and a nice course but it's the back end of nowhere and one of the coldest and wettest places on earth through the winter months.

Rivanhall Oaks in Witham is £540 for 7 day rights, I'd argue that it's fantastic value for money considering they have some of the best practise facilities in the area, a small par 3 course and what seems like a decent group of members. Only problem is, it's a 9 holer, can get a bit congested when you're looking to play the "back 9" and they're letting out pay 'n' play people off the 1st.

Your options are seriously limited I'm afraid.

Hi Swanny,

thanks for guidance. The Essex looks a really good set up and good value compared to other 18 hole courses

Bunsay and Rivanhall look very good value although 9 hole full courses only.

Living in Chelmsford Bunsay is a better location however I will play all 3 course over the next few weeks and then make a decision.

thanks again for helping as I know have a short list to work from

just got a message from benton hall gc and if you join before end of may you got 2 months free membership and I'm pretty sure you can play the essex within that membership after 1pm on a weekends and all day monday to friday

Your all missing the little gem that is The Burstead! Just south of Billericay - 18 holes of pure delightful-ness.

Pay as you play - £ 369 (reduced green fee whenever you want to play).

Keep Benton Hall, pay for 12 months but it's closed for 4 of them when the river floods. It's a half decent track in Summer but not as elite as some of their members think it is. I reckon Bunsay is deffo your best bet living in Chelmsford on your budget. Rivenhall is ok but the course is or was very drab and featureless. Maldon is a good track , it has 18 tees thus making the second loop different from the first. Really enjoyed it . Swanny - it's deffo worth a Summer twilight , you'll like it.

You're right about Benton, they've done a load of work on it but they still struggled this Winter. That being said, think they were only shut for a couple of weeks, but that stretch of holes around the turn where the river is, looked a mess.

Bunsay Downs is a lovely little track for the money (£500 for 7 day membership), played it a few times and it has some lovely views. Agree that this is probably your best option for your budget.

The best thing about my place is that you get to play the other Club Company courses around the country for nothing, I could head to Benton Hall now, sign the book and walk on to the first tee with no questions asked. Bit of a trek from Chelmsford though.
