Hi all,

While striving to get my handicap down I have been wondering how handicap reviews work within golf. I have come down from 11.5 to 9.1 this season (wish it was more but unfortunately the weather up here has been awful this summer!) and don't know anything about how this works or even if I am eligible (or how much more I would need to go down before I was eligible).

Any information would be greatly appreciated;

How do you know if you are eligible for a reduction in your handicap?
Do these get applied within the season or only at the end of season?
Can I request that my handicap is reviewed?
Is there any set criteria for this or is it managed on a club by club basis?
Is there any difference in this process between Scotland and England?

Yes - it only applies in England. No shortcuts up here! ;)

EDIT: Well ESRs are only down south. We still have an annual review up here, conducted by your handicap committee sometime over the winter. It seems like a black art though, I've never had a cut from it even in years when I thought it might be a possibility from my sketchy knowledge of the algorithm.

I wouldn't get caught up in expecting an annual review cut.

never heard of anyone at any club up here getting one.

Just carry on shooting below you current handicap and you will come down.

If that is indeed the case with all Scottish clubs then the inescapable conclusion is that you are a load of bandits.

ESR is if you are -4 in close proximity to each other but only in england.
Annual review is a set formula that you can find online.

Doesn't have to be that close. Our most recent one had 11 qualifiers between the "trigger" round and the ESR recommendation round.
