What with working night shifts and the debacle of the Ashes over. I need something else to help me through the hours. Thankfully its the Oz open, so thats two weeks covered. Now i'm sure some liberals will pull me over the coals for this. But for the life of me, i still can't see why the winners deserve equal prize money. Surely paying them an equal amount per minute would be fairer? And even that i would argue would be wrong. When it comes to marketing. I'm sure that the lions share is made on the mens tour.

They can have equal winnings if they both play the same amount of sets

So if Nadal wins his way to the final in straight sets and Murray wins all his 3-2 would they both be eligible for the same winners amount :D

Yes as Nadal would have played better to win 3-0 every match. I don't see why the women don't play best of 5 in the slams. A set in a women's match is generally quicker than mens anyway.

I agree that is a load of BS that the ladies get the same for less work.

I favour this approach too. Same pay for same work, so 5 sets for Ladies at Slams too.

However, the Ladies (and BJ King in particularly) did a particularly good job (and well warranted at the time) arguing their case.

I don't believe there is actually the same amount of prize money overall - and the Qualifying Tournament prize fund should be excluded from any calc anyway as that's somewhat unpredictable. So in some regards the money reflects the quality - there's far greater depth to the Men's field than the Ladies one - though it's still rather weighted towards Ladies (and their 3 sets) imo. There are still far too many Ladies matches where the 2nd set (of a 2 set match) is 6-0 or 6-1, though it seems to have got better over the last few years.

I'm just curious over who is suffering the injustice here? Are the likes of Murray, Nadal and co hard up, are they complaining the women are taking their hard earned money and they are struggling to make ends meet?

Should you not really be more upset and concerned about the fact that women make up half of the US workforce, but the average working woman earns only 77 percent of what the average working man makes. Or that on average, women in the EU earn around 16 % less per hour than men, 20 % in the United Kingdom?

To quote the great Beyonce, 'Equality will be achieved when men and women are granted equal pay and equal respect.' And to me this seems a step in that direction. But it's not my place to to suggest that it's slightly inevitable, yet still depressing, that a board mostly populated by male golfers can't see why equal pay for women is not a good thing. So I won't.;)

The amount that the ladies make on the European tour is peanuts compared to the blokes

If you are coming top 5 each week you may make a decent living, but for a journeywoman, its a tough slog

Back to the tennis. I never understoood why the blokes didn't just go on strike for equal rights (reduction of sets) as soon as the women got equal pay. Maybe they don't carry a pair between any of them and the women have them all.

AAARGGGG,SCREAM, OOOOOOF, SCREAM, AAAAAASRGGGG, SCREAM, OOOOOOF, SCREAM, WAIL, etc etc etc

Here's a thought - if the women's game could play 5-setters for the same money I am pretty sure that they would. They would then be getting paid the same for doing the same job. The fact that they are not 'alllowed' to play 5-setters in matches is not the fault of the players? So you could say that getting paid less because they only play 3-setters is a restriction on their earnings.

And when you bring in entertainment considerations...well in our game we pay the same to watch Rory as we do to watch the journeyman pro in the group behind.

In truth, IMO it matters not a jot to any of us how much women tennis players get paid as that wouldn't (I suggest) affect how much you or I enjoy women's tennis and do we really care how much they get paid? And I don't think it would really affect tournament admission prices that much either if there was equality. So just pay all the same and the argument/discussion goes.

If if the women's and men's game were run individually then the woman's game would crumble as there is nowhere near as much interest on it. Check out viewing figures if you wish into see the difference if interest the games generate. As to the 5 sets. When te woman campaigned for equal pay, they never even offered to play five sets.

If a woman joined you at work and work a 25 hour week and wanted equal pay, would that be fair? Woman got their pay rise purely as the tournament hosts were so scared if being accused of being sexist.

Also, as someone who watched both male and female tennis. If the tennis went for 5 sets, I wouldn't watch any. The first to sets are generally interesting, but due to the dirth of talent they quite frequently finish with a 6-1/6-0.

Jeez, first the tennis and now this http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-birmingham-25733267

It's political correctness gone mad I tells you, but everyone is afraid to say it as they are being silenced by the namby pamby yurt eating liberal guardian reading elite.

£757m for 157 woman! Having read article they all did 'traditionally' woman's jobs. Articles worlds not mine. Such as cleaners and home help. This is for unpaid bonuses. Firstly, they're bonus'. Since when are you instantly entitled to one. Secondly, who in that section thinks there deserving of bonuses totally £10k a year assuming they all worked 40 years each!

You're my hero for today

Only today? Jeez, I stick up for the sisters and open myself up for all sorts of accusations of being a woolly daily mail hating liberal from misogynists everywhere, and I only get to be a hero for one day!!! Cheers love ;)

As someone who hasn't really looked at this subject much, what are the opinions on equality in younger generations? From a purely personal point of view, I've always been paid and treated equally to the females in my workplace. Could it be that there is change for the good, but it will take time to filter out the historical opinions, much the same as "racist" attitudes of previous generations arebeen filtered out as the younger generations realise it isn't right?

Or am I being much much too hopeful?

Whilst I may have come across sexist in the original question, my point is this. What is it they do to justify the equal pay. From a purely business perspective. They bring in less revenues and therefor the financial returns are subsidised by the men's game. Unfortunately, like it or not. Sport is still generally a mans game. By that I mean more male competitors and spectators. Therefor the men's game generators more revenue and deserves the greater prize money.

'Sexism' in sport is different to the general workplace. Nowadays everyone is entitled to the same basic wage, irrespective of sex. Sports are just business' that pay their staff accordingly.ale sports generate more cash so in my opinion the staff should earn more.
