Hi folks

looking at the pros and cons of remapping, I have changed from a honda civic, 1.8 petrol, to a 1.6 focus diesel, which only has 115 bhp, its not too bad, but a bit slow on the pull away and not as much go as i would like.

is it worth looking at mapping to boost the performance, i know some of the pluses but there also has to be a down side, any experts out there?

thanks

I had mine remapped by a friend that works for a performance centre. Speak to such a centre for advice about what is safe. Remember most of these engines are sold in different mode variants with different power down to how they are mapped.
I got mine safely up by them trying different maps and then charting the data.

thanks Greig, I'll have a look for somewhere here for a site that does it, I know a friend who can take it somewhere, he also does my services etc, i have a word and see where he recommends

It can be quite costly so you also have to work out of its worth it. North of £400 for 10 or 20BHP on a small engine might not be justifiable, only you can answer that though. Your gains will mainly be in torque I would think being diesel, mine was all power 😂

Likely no matter how much additional HP you add, with a diesel your always going to be grabbing for 2nd gear like a mad man... Much more power/torque with in gear acceleration but poor on move off.

Well worth doing, I have either remapped or bought plug in modules for my last few diesel cars. Noticeable increase in torque and power making the car much more driveable. If it is out of warranty then nothing to worry about. Don't forget to let your insurance company know though, the increase in premium is often very little!!

Or not allowed. I had to change from More>than because they won't allow it at all. Admiral charged a small increase in premium.

I had my premium actually reduce with one insurer! But yes, varies from company to company.

I'm considering a tuning box for mine to slightly modify the power curve and reduce turbo lag, the cars quick but not always the most responsive. It pushes the BHP up to around 400 too so that's a small bonus

This is why its important to get advice from a performance centre that specialises in remaps to understand what is safe, minimise the risk.

Insurance wise, the remap took mine from 362BHP to 405BHP for an extra £20 per year on my premium (Sainsbury Bank).
was

the increase noticeable in general use? Was the power delivery smoother?

It's a petrol with a 9 speed auto and the power increase is evident across the whole.
Delivery is subtly smoother I would say. Moving off once it catches 3rd gear that's where I notice the big difference.

Thats good to know. Mines a petrol auto too so it's good that it's noticeable. What do you have? Merc?

Thought so with the 9 speed auto. I've got an m240 so looking for the power to get to 400ish

Should be easy enough with that engine. 405 was optimal for mine after a few different settings with torque up to 400ft lb.

Driving it is much better, and a few flat spots were ironed out. Sounds more raw too but that could just be in my head.

Will have to get it booked in. Sounds like it will be more fun
