Myself and three of my friends had booked a golf day at Whittlebury golf club this Monday just gone. We had planned this a little over a month in advance and originally were all very excited for it. I had later found out that two of my friends hadn't played or practiced since we had arranged the day but came along any way.

We teed off on the first hole with no real drama, everyone playing to the abilities. However, five holes in one of my friends (who is beyond terrible) started to throw his club down the hole further than his actual shot had travelled in anger. We dismissed this as a one off hoping he wouldn't do it again. He did continue to throw his club after each poor shot for another couple of holes before I had a stern word with him.

We finished the first eighteen holes and went for lunch before going back out for another nine. Painfully, he and another of my friends started throwing their clubs once again after poor shots.

Has anyone else experienced this behaviour before? What was/would be your response if you saw it happening?

Stern words would have been my choice too - sounds like you did that and they carried on anyway. You can't help it if other people don't know how to behave. I'd just choose not to play with them again.

Shep

I was afraid someone would report us and have us removed from the course. I certainly don't want to play with one of them again, not in the sport of golf I don't think to throw your equipment in anger. Especially when its a friendly round and he isn't a good golfer in the first place

Why do people get that upset when they are so obviously rubbish at golf.

It is not as if they felt frustrated at the hours of practice they put in seemingly going to waste.

Their bad behaviour can spoil your round as well. For most people, golf is a way to relax; your friends clearly see it as a way to torment themselves. Bad shots are just bad shots - nobody dies, so just laugh and get on with it!

One of our regular four ball won Vice captains day a few weeks ago and in his speech he mentioned how he had a bit of a reputation as a chucker but all that had been 'surpassed' by one of the group who had thrown their whole bag over a fence during the round. That person was me but it was done more in frustration than anything else. We had all seen my tee shot bounce up against a fence and there was very little rough around it but the ball just disappeared. Cue bag over fence and it did save me carrying it round.

What happened next?? Did you just leave them there?

I could understand being frustrated if it was a major competition with money or some other incentive at stake, but it was a friendly game (we were playing team match play and he was with me, we won 8 and 7) and just like garyinderry has said its not like he is good or had practiced.

I played amazing any way so one benefit is it didn't put me off :)

I second this

They landed on the club heads and at the time I was hoping that the driver had snapped (out of favour at the time) but they were ok so just carried on to the next tee. I am now back in love with the driver so glad it was still in one piece.

So a rubbish golfer hits a rubbish shot & then throws his toys out of the pram & makes himself look a complete tool.

Playing off 18 I obviously hit a few bad shots, surely it's to be expected.
I Prefer a good swear,it costs less than breaking good clubs.

Lad I sometimes play with has quite a short fuse, he often throws his ball into the trees if he misses a short putt and has walked off mid round without a word, thankfully I wasn't there that time.

Played with future son in law and his eldest son a couple of years ago ( 16 yr old at he time), we were up in seahouses. the first time he played, he was excellent and a joy to be with.
The second time, I was livid, he sulked, threw tantrums. I had steam coming out of my ears. Totally ruined 18 holes. I was dying to say summat. His dad was embarrassed. that night in the "the ship" pub his dad apologised.
i told him you should of told him to sod off the golf course and not to take any crap off him.

I played a forum meet where one of the forum members was chucking his balls everywhere ................ sorry got that wrong, they were his shots!

Crazy!! :D You chucked your whole bag over a fence.... At some point after that you realised that was total madness and then there was a moment where you realised you had to either walk off to the car park or climb over the fence, collect your clubs and carry on. Sorry but I just wish I could have watched that unfold!!! :D

Sorry for taking the Micky, you did not have to tell us. Does it feel ridiculous looking back on it?

I'm sorry but in my opinion if you can't control yourself in a simple situation like a game of golf I'm really not that interested in playing with you. Its a game to be enjoyed and have a laugh. Golfers who toss clubs are obviously tossers.
