Pretty sure I'm going to get myself an electric trolley, just had a question over whether to get 18 or 36 hole (lithium) battery so thought I'd get some opinions.

I'll play about 5 to 8 days golf this year where I'll do 36 holes, so....

Is it worth buying a 36 hole battery for that?

If I use a 36 hole battery for only 18 holes 95% of the time is this detrimental to the battery as it won't be fully uncharged a lot of the time?

Should I just get a spare/cheap second 18 hole battery for the odd occasion I need it? This may still be more expensive than just buying a 36 holed up front though?

Apologies if these come across as stupid questions!

Thanks

I rarely play 36 holes in a day these days, however I bought a motocaddy 18 hole lithium battery last year and I have on the odd occasion forgotten to charge it, it has always easily managed a second round of 18 holes. My course whilst not long does have quite a few gradients on it. Hope this helps.

My (brand new) 36 hole battery only managed 35 holes this week. Although the first 18 did take over five hours......

If going with a motocaddy it's £50.00 difference between a 18 & a 36 hole Lithium battery, if you can afford it I'd go with the 36, even for peace of mind. Had no issues with mine over last 12 months and if you register it you get a 5 year warranty.

yet another manufacturer claiming a 5 year warranty when in fact its a 2 year warranty and then a sliding scale discount if you buy a new one the last 3 years. Getting a 15% discount in the 5th year if you buy a replacement from them hardly what I would call a warranty!

Cheers, more likely my inability to read small print.

I'd go 36 as long as the cost isn't a ridiculous amount more than the 18.

Pretty sure technology has moved on from the days when you could kill a battery through 'improper' charging and discharging.

I use mine twice before I charge it up again, but only because it's more convenient than taking it our of the car after Saturday's game to put it back in for Sunday.

I bought my 36 hole battery from Liberty Batteries in May last year. I've had no issues with it to date, and regularly only charge it after 36 holes, whether that be 36 in a day, or combination of 18+9+9 etc. over a few days. When I bought the battery, I was given the following info from liberty:

The battery is good for 2000 cycles or thereabouts. One cycle is a full charge from empty, so if charged after 1 round of 18 holes, it is only a half cycle, after 9 holes is a quarter cycle. The battery does not require charging after each round, it will hold its charge well for a while in ambient temperatures and doesn't need to be left on trickle charge. However, it is a good idea to give it a little boost if you haven’t used it for a couple of weeks. In addition if you do not use it over the winter months it is good practice to give it a charge every 5 weeks or so. After charging full (approx 4 hours from empty), the charger can be switched off and the battery will continue to hold charge as per previous sentence.

They give a straight 2 year warranty, no sliding scale over 5 years. Seems they have reduced the price to £160 at the moment - I have no sales related link to them, just a happy customer. Their offer is here http://www.libertybatteries.com/new...-charger-neoprene-bag-and-t-bar-lead-97-p.asp

Go for the 36 one

I bought mine about 4 years ago now and it just about squezzes 36 with a bit of tender management.

Thanks all

Sounds like 36 hole for the best, only £50 more so makes sense.

Just to decide on which model now......

Motocaddy S1 - simple but does everything you need , superb trolley

Cheers, been mulling over whether the M1 (or S3) are worth the extra cash.

Recommend the S1?

Definitely Motocaddy anyway.

The M1 is a good trolley if you want to have it take up less space when folded and it's a little lighter.

The S3 has a few extra features included

I have had an S1 for 5 years now and it's solid - only thing I have had an issue with is the control cable which was replaced for £7

Highly recommend it

The M1 is what I've got, excellent trolley, upgraded from S3 and the size it folds down to is great. Comes with built in accesory station and USB Charger which I've used a few times plugging in my GPS when playing 36 holes.
Battery can stay in situ as well for charging if you want to.

Cheers, I'm not that fussed about the GPS charger etc but the size it folds down to is appealing, hmmm.

M1 is the best trolley of the 2. Folds down really small. On a side note if you get the 18 hole battery it folds up in the trolley.. The 36 needs to be removed.

M1 you don't need to buy the adaptor to fit things like a score card holder or umbrella holder..

The charger can be most useful if you need to top up your phone at all.

Iain, after a week with the M1....

The charger thingy also works as a cradle for a hand held. Find it handy, kind of half way between watch and having a GPs swinging on your bag for convenience. Now I can use my Garmin hand held easily as it pretty much sits up in the handle.

The thingy for attaching umbrella holder etc is also included, extra with others.

The folding / unfolding is also impressively simple, even for a clumsy two-hat like me.

Wheels are marked with 'R' and 'L', helps with getting shoes on correctly :)

Also, if you go M1, mines black, so can you get white so we don't clash?!??!

One of my group yesterday was using the charger cradle to carry his box of cigarettes lol
