I see Miliband has asked Doreen Lawrence to become a Labour peer.
Good for him.

I am starting to warm to him a bit.
Mind you it was from a very low base.

So how would a MP nominate someone for the Lords without you saying they were doing it solely out of self-interest.

I guess I would say that about most. I am not a great fan of Peerages as most are slaps on the back for washed up politicians, their paymasters and cronies, Bishops and Life Peers have no right to be there. There are a few who deserve to be there but not many. When Prescott and Sugar were elevated it put the final taint on it for me, I would prefer an elected second house.

OK - that's fine - but it appears that your cynicism in respect of MPs knows few bounds. To the extent that no matter what MP of whatever hue nominates someone for a seat in the Lords (no matter how worthy that nominee may be) you will view the MPs actions as nothing more than self-serving.

Doreen Lawrence is a courageous and admirable woman for sure but the politicians are generally either paying back supporters or currying favourable publicity with these appointments. Much of the harassment and surveillance of her family took place under Labour. The whole HoL is an anachronism.

As for the putative Lord Hairdryer of Salford, good for him for turning it down. He has spent enough of his life listening to overpaid and priveleged narcissists whine without continuing it in another place.

Seems a pretty reasonable starting position to me!

I'm definitely a fan of a 2nd house that has some sort of scrutiny/moderating role on the 'other place'. Otherwise the Commons simply becomes an 'Elected Dictatorship'! HofL works pretty well to me, though I'm not a great believer in (so many) Bishops being members.

Only if you truly believe it to be the case that all MPs are in it for themselves. And not only do I not believe that to be anything like the case - I don't believe you actually think that either - it's just an easy thing to say, an easy and rather lazy assertion that fits a line many would peddle - for their own reasons.

I bet that you don't think that all MPs are rapscallions, scoundrels and rogues. Not all of them...some of them, maybe most of them - but not all of them. Though I could easily be wrong in which case you take my £2 (I never bet more than that - if you don't have a lot to spare you don't chuck it around)
