For those who can remember David Duval was quite a player at the end of the 90' early 2000's, he was the only player to become world number one whilst Tiger was playing the best golf in the history of the game, quite a feat by Duval. In recent years Duvals form completely nosed dived(I believe he even had to give up he's mansion) and he has had to rely on sponsors invites to play PGA tournaments nowdays.Duval has now said if he doesent earn he's card through merit this year he is going to give the game up and in he's words "go and do something else".Maybe his time has come but once this guy could really play the game and this just shows how fickle the world of golf is even for the greatest players of the game.

VJ Singh got to world number one in the midst of Tigers reign also or does he not fit the criteria?

Would be nice to see Duval get his card back, he did put in some great performances when he was at the top of his game and made some good watching.

Not sure about the medical issues but he did try to put a lot of muscle on for some reason. That seemed to start his fall from grace.

Infact VJ Singh is still playing decent golf and apart from last year has kept he's card on merit year after year, he's yearly order of merit reads for the last five years,
2009-68th
2010-66th
2011-28th
2012-51st
2013-168th
Year after year Duval simply hasn't maintained he's card and has had to rely on sponsors invites, I'd love to see him do well this week.
Duval did have injury problems and had a medical exemption to play but that was a long time ago and he's well over it.

Stories like this and Ian Baker-Finch's are very sad and show just how fickle this game can be. They aren't the only ones either. Just wondering if this happens in other sports? Trying to think of examples where top players have completely lost the ability to compete without injury or illness being a factor, but can't off the top of my head.

Man utd's first team squad this season :p

So now the English lesson has finished  - back to Duval

Watching him last night and he seemed to be swinging the club well and striking the ball well. Some putts need to drop a bit more but looking at him he has the demeanour of someone who already believes he is finished ?

Isn't is jibes instead of jibs?? Unless I've wrongly logged into yachting monthly!

..........:whoo:
Good grief I start a thread about Mr Duval and the spelling trolls have hijacked it , for people who are actually interested in golf didnt DD and he's father win on the same day years ago? David on the PGA and he's father on the Champions, quite a family achievement that.

Must say I never really liked the guy as he rose through the rankings. Seemed robotic and lacking in personality.

BUT.... I was there at Royal Lytham in 2001 when he gave one of the most respectful and humble acceptance speeches I've ever heard at the Open or anywhere else. Certainly changed my view of him and probably exposed something we all fall into sometimes of judging people we don't even know based on very limited info! I thought it was a real shame when he declined so suddenly. The margins are so small in the pro game.

It's "his" :ears:
