Yesterday saw a very poorly supported GM forum meet of sorts take place at the magnificent conditioned Dundonald Links in North Ayrshire.

Dundonald is sandwiched on a strip of land that boasts delights such as Western and Glasgow Gailes and Barrassie.

Firstly thanks are needed to both stevek1969 and J_F for battling their way through crazy M8 rush hour traffic and making the effort (and winning) to make the 0900hrs tee time.

Early indications were not promising with squals of rain racing up the Clyde offering frequent downpours supported by blustery winds. A quick cuppa and change into waterproofs was sufficient time to allow the rain to disappear behind Arran and make its way towards the Mull of Kintyre.

The first tee balls up paired J_F and myself against stevek and Callum. After a promising start J_F and I surrendered our early one up lead to reach the turn in 4 down thanks to some recovery play by stevek that Seve himself would have been proud of! Infact stevek's birdie at the 9th is something that I could not even come close to giving justice through writing. I'll let him tell the story! His kids are probably bored of it already.

A change of captaincy into the back 9 quickly saw J_F and I reduce the deficet to 2 but with both of us failing to get up and down at 16th the lights went out on our spirited comeback which was ended with a shake of the hands and a 3+2 defeat.

After a quick bite to eat it was back to the first tee this time the balls would throw together myself and stevek against Callum and J_F. The first hole is something I would rather forget with an outstanding 9! which included 4 shots to come out of a fairway bunker. Infact it was a one putt 9!!!!

The par 5 3rd hole which measures 510 yards was reduced to a drive and a 9 iron by the ridiculously long Callum who cracked a 350 yard drive down the fairway!

2 down through three holes and things were not looking good however a good spell of holes from the 4th to the 9th saw stevek and I race into a 3up lead at the turn. Slow play and a chilly wind saw me dive into the clubhouse, quickly emerging again with four hot coffees to go. This obviously knocked steve and I off our stide as we quickly lost the 10th. J_F added even more pressure by knocking a great shot into the short 11th in a strengthening wind. I managed to be the equal of J_F who added even more pressure by bringing out his camera which I'm sure was a bit of poor sportsmanship!!

Reaching the dreaded 3 up with 5 to play mark where its often said "3 up with 5 to play never wins" steve and I had the wobble. I found yet another fairway bunker off the tee playing fourteen and stevek somehow lost his ball from his second shot which was a bit of a mystery. An unusual 3 putt by Callum at the 170 yard par 3 15 which was playing more like 240 yards into the wind saw stevek and I go dormie 3 up.

J_F and Callum won 16 where I again found a bunker off of the tee before Steve and I closed out the match on the 17th.

Apart from a couple of showers it was a great day out and 2 rounds of golf plus lunch for £50 was superb value. Its a shame more people didnt take up the offer as it was certainly a great day out and the company was not too bad either. The standard of golf was excellent with everyone playing some great golf (at times!)

It may be an expensive day for stevek1969 though as I believe that a Ping Rapture V2 may now be on order!!! Someone may pick up an R9 for a song though. J_F has plenty of photos which I'm sure he will host soon.

First of all thanks to Crawford, a.k.a. the craw for organising this. It was great to play together at last and in such good company with Steve, a.k.a. steve1969 and Callum.

Here's a little video of the 2nd round of the day when the weather was a lot more blustery than a relatively calm but slightly wetter morning. They were building arks on the east coast so we were pleased to be on the west.

To be honest, with the amount of rain which had fallen overnight we were lucky that the course was playable at all. Yeah, some of the bunkers were flooded and a few puddles were lying here and there but the course was great to play. Great tight crisp turf and superb greens. Certainly a test of golf.

I thought the front 9 was pretty scorable but I fell apart in the back nine on both rounds with lost balls and doubles featuring. It was pretty tough, especially in that afternoon wind. Great par 3's. A good mix of short and long but all tough.

As with most of my golf this year I brought my C game, especially off the tee, but I did at least have a very makeable eagle putt on the 3rd which missed narrowly, so that was the highlight. Still, the common denominator on both losing teams was me. Just too many basic mistakes that I wasn't making this time last year. The swing seems like a stranger to me at the mo' and you need to be driving well to score at Dundonald.

Was a pleasure to watch Steve's par and birdie blitz on the front 9 in the morning and Callum's overall game all day. He's monstrously long with a great short game to boot as can be seen on the video. I can see why Crawford scooped the prizes at the Muckhart outing too. Very solid mostly with the odd flash of brilliance. We all had our moments though.

Well chuffed to have played despite 4 hours of driving and 9 hours of golf taking it's toll today.

Crawford, Steve, Callum...cheers boys. A grand day.

Looks like you had a good day on what looks a really nice course.

Not sure I'd fancy playing in that wind though, the game's hard enough with no wind!! :D

Probably the best quality video I've seen on the internet too. Was it a phone or proper video camera?

Sorry I couldnt make it but college classes must come first ...... Dont know what Region3 is on about wind...... thats not wind that was just a bit fresh.

Course looked well and glad you all had a good time. From next summer on I will 7 weeks holidays in the summer hopefully catch up then. :D

Thanks to Crawford (thecraw) for noticing this deal and advertising it ,thought we might have got a bigger response but not to worry , guys you missed a cracking course and deal £50 for 36 holes and lunch superb.

When i left Dundee at 6am it was tanking with rain when i got home at 10pm it was still tanking down and the Ark was full.

Anyway the course was in great condition considering the rain they'd had some really good holes thet make you think were to put your ball mines was in the crap most times but nothing changes there.

In the morning i partnered Callum what a striker of a golf ball its not fair he hits miles and normally straight i had my usually 2 hole warm up then 6 pars and a birdie.
I hacked my ball out knee high rough ,blind shot to the green over a mound, bounced over the burn up and over the slope and stopped 6 ft from the stick easy 3 the rest was the usual rubbish.

In the afternoon i partnerd Crawford who played good golf allday he must have sore back today after carrying me all afternoon haha.

J_F was steady all day, and John, Disney are looking for a new movie maker haha.

To finish of a great day was had by all and hope to do again soon.

By the way the R9 will be replaced shortly with the Rapture, 4 straightest drives i hit all day.

Looks a good course. A bit windy and wet :D
Great bunker shot (Callum?)- the highlight of the Video.

J_F I think you are being very harsh on yourself. Your golf was very steady all day and your driving was no where near as bad as you make out.

Thanks for the video. My swing looks worse than it feels!!

It was a smashing day all in all. My head hit the pillow and I was out like a light. Looking forward to the next one.

Everyone's swing looks worse than they think, Crawford. We all think it's beautifully elegant until we see it in action.

Your ability to take video IS certainly much worse than your golf though. You got the end of my swing both times. You did manage to capture this nice photo though. I love it when you can see the ball flying away (roughly) in the right direction.

Stick to the photos, mate. The BBC won't be phoning you anytime soon.

:D :D

Region3 that wasn't wind ,that was just a nice sea breeze, you guys dont no what your missing playing courses like that.

HID thought i'd been on a sun bed all day my face was that weather beaten, wouldn't have it any other way golf at its best. :) :)

Region3 that wasn't wind ,that was just a nice sea breeze, you guys dont no what your missing playing courses like that.

Unfortunatley that wee sea breeze put paid to my round today, only managed 5 holes. It wasnt so much the wind it was more the rain comming down that hard it was going back up the leg of my waterproofs :p

JF nice photo,

Shame we didnt have a camera on u in Muckhart retriving your wedge when it slipped ;) ;)out of your hand. Was sorry I miised the day its a great course and 1 get to play about twice a year.

Farneyman, Andy,

Up ye !

Murph,

Double up ye!

And I thought you were friends. Yes, it was nice to see a drive get past the red posts. Doesn't happen too often nowadays.

Oh...by the way...what are your handicaps at the moment, boys?
