Just had a few days in both places. The last time we visited Dundee was 2 years' ago and coming in from over THe Tay Bridge nothing has changed. it takes so long to get into Dundee it is untrue. Somebody sai they we applying for City of Culture 2017. I would be surprised if they sorted this mess out by then and now they are pulling down some eyesore.

Turning to Efinburgh we were staying near Haymarket and it took us 30 minutes to reach PRincees Street when will they sort these trams out?

2 great cities but badly letting themselves down. Do the Councils care and what can be done?

Edinburgh's problem is (long term) temporary. I resolved it by accepting that the Council was anti-car - not necessarily a bad thing in the central area. Whether trams are/is the solution remains to be seen. Princes St was certainly a disaster area before that proposal was really underway.

Dundee'd problem appears to be permanent though.

Haymarket to Princess St takes just a few minutes. The trains run every few minutes...we visit several times a year - love it.

But I agree with you about Dundee. Not somewhere I'd rush back to.

Foxholer got it right, The Council are anti car. They've done everything possible in the past 10 years to make sure we car drivers are aware of it.

The trams fiasco is punishment for not accepting the road tolling scheme the Council had proposed. And in case that isn't enough, they've got the worst traffic management strategy of any of Scotlands towns or cities. The trams fiasco is just the icing on the cake.

All punishment for those of us who drive a car.

Edinburgh council are a joke... don't get me started....

As an ex-Edinburgher, I wholeheartedly and 100% endorse both these comments. :D

You should think twice about driving in or through just about any major city centre in Europe. If you do it, you will have delays. Shame if you have no choice but to do it. Your own daft fault if you had a choice though.

Edinburgh has an excellent by pass, numerous park and ride schemes and one of best public transport networks in Europe.

Outwith the ludicrous tram project, Edinburgh isn't any worse or better than any other European capital for driving in.

Dundee City centre is Mecca for junkie scumbags. Don't go there by car, by bus, by train, or on foot.

Lol. I visit Dundee fairly frequently and, apart from the undead,it's a great wee toon. Is that better ? :whoo:

At least in Edinburgh the junkies and jakeys seem, on the most part, to be kept separate from the tourists.
I've never visited Dundee as a tourist, only for the fitba ( and that was bleak enough).

That must be the away end at Dens  only beaten into second place as the coldest away end in Scotland by the permafrost ridden place that is Pittodrie

Oh I dunno, the Caledonian Stadium in Inverness and Ross County's Victoria Park are both pretty nippy places to be.. Inverness is a cracking place though, which makes up for the cauld.

Dunno. I'd put the away end at Easter Road ( when it was still open to the elements) slightly above Pittodrie in the league table of bleakness.

I guess you must have picked the wrong time to use the Tay Bridge. I use it regularly and have NEVER had any delays either heading North or South.

Having been brought up and educated in Edinburgh, I agree about the tram fiasco. It is a political issue and wasn't needed. There is a perfectly good bus service and if any councilor wanted to leave a legacy they should have opted for re-opening the suburban railway line and build a spur to the airport. Many busineses in Leith Walk were badly hit with the tram development and now it isn't going there!

I spend a lot of time working in Scotland and Aberdeen is the worst for me, trying to get through that city to a customer in Turiff takes the pi$$ if you arrive at the wrong time.

All I remember about Dundee are the 7000 or so roundabouts on the A90 ring road and a taxi driver not knowing how to get the the Tesco on said ring road. The clown took me to a different Tesco and didn't believe me that there was even one on the ring road.
