Escaping Wills and Kate wedding by heading south-west for a couple of nights.Any suggestions on courses?Only played Brighouse Bay down there and looking for suggestions.

Howdy

I was on holiday there with my dad in September last year. Played Brighouse Bay on a minging day (wind speed about 40-50 mph) with battering rain...only the fool-hardy that day!

Also played at Thornhill (Andrew Coltard's home course) which was in great condition. Lovely setting and most holes are lined by mature forest so each one feels individual if you get my drift). Can also recommend Colvend (hilly +++ but great views from the top) and Kirkudbright (undulating parkland course in good condition). You can buy a ticket for £40 that gives you a round at both Kirkudbright and Brighouse, not a bad deal at all.

We did travel to Southerness, however, the weather was awful and we couldn't justify playing in those conditions for their expensive green fees. Course look great though.

Have a good trip!

Years since I played it, but Powfoot is a good course, should be worth a visit.

Could be quite pricey, but have a look at the Cally Palace Hotel for any deals they might have on. They have a cracking little course on there grounds, exclusively for residents. Played it last April and was really impressed.

Cheers for the suggestions, I'll have a wee look.got a wee family but'n ben near Gatehouse so dont need accom, shame it rules out the caley palace.

Dumfries and county is not a bad track and it has one of the best pro shops I've been in.

Southerness is easily the top course in the area. The day ticket is good value and whilst a tad expensive is worth the money.

Powfoot is OK, played there twice last year but there was extensive alterations going on in October

Southerness probably has one of the worst websites I've experienced for a top track. Was it designed by a 12 year old?

Someone not knowing the course or anything about the area would instantly skip right past that. Very very poor IMO.

Exactly my thoughts.I've heard of the course and people raving about it, but had a look at the site and pretty much decided it was shyte.
I'll look again.

i could not rate southerness higher, played years ago whilst i was in the area and its a beautiful track. Enjoy urself if u play there cos its such a gud track and very cahllenging, gud test to see how ur game holds up

Southerness is good and definitely worth a visit but not as good as the hype imo.

I murdered the front 9 then the back 9 murdered me when I played it in 2009! If you got it on a calm day it's not too hard. Like the Old Course it has no dunes to speak of for a links and only shows it's teeth when the wind is up.

I totally agree about the website. I was just trying to stay on topic :D :D

Colvend - Not saying anyone won't enjoy it, I did when we played an open comp there but it's just not one I'd rush back to. OP was asking for good courses in the area and sorry, there's no way anyone could say it's a good course compared with the others mentioned. Too many Mickey holes, 18th is good though and overall decent value......but to put that in perspective, we paid £7.
