Just watching some video clips on BBC news site and it shows footage from inside the plane once it is on Terrafirma. now bearing in mind the plane could of smashed into a million pieces. People were trying to get there bags out of the overhead lockers before sliding down the chute.

Are some people born stupid or is that the norm?

Wow just wow.

in that situation why would your first thought be "got to get my bag".

I would hope my first thoughts would be where's my family, are they ok, let's get off.

It's not even one person it's nearly all of them. Stupid stupid people.

Norm, now bear in mind the Dubai one was a crash landing so no fire was known bu passengers at the time where as the Vegas fire on the BA flight was a fire and people still came off with luggage.

You can't fix stupid.

Tip for anyone willing to listen. Keep your wallet and passport on you until the seatbelt light comes off, if in the event you have an aborted take of or have to have an emergency landing and have to leave the plane quickly without your belongings you could have all sorts of issues with no money or ID.

The same thing happened on a plane when I was in Vegas and the airline threatened to sue people seen with suitcases. Stating that they could have ripped the chutes leaving others behind them stuck.
Should have sued them IMO.

Planes should have an override on them that as soon as there's any form of emergency the overhead lockers actually lock, some people need saving from their own stupidity!

A guy on my watch moved over to dubai two weeks ago and got a job with the airport fire service. We ripped him to pieces for months about how boring it will be. Yesterday he sent us all a email with nothing but a smiling face!!!!! Git!

Strange as one of the firemen died fighting the blaze.

Loving the judgments from everyone.

Basically you have no idea how you would react in such a situation. Humans tend to react strangely when put in highly stressful situations. I suspect most were following the others in a pack mentality, assuming it was ok and they had time. People always think they have more time in emergency situations, especially when it comes to fire and they make rash decisions.

It's all well and good calling them stupid and saying how you would react, but unless you have been in that situation or similar, I'm afraid you don't know squat.

Im afraid if i was in that position luggage would be the least of my worries.

No, they are stupid, period. Possesions v life? The announcement would have come out, leave everything behind. We know to leave everything behind. What they did was selfish and put other peoples lives at risk as they blocked the aisles. No excuse.

The decision was not whether to stop a lone gunman, a thug going on a rampage, going into a burning building to save a life. Those are things you can never prepare for. This was clear, get out of a plane as quickly as you can, carry nothing, don't stop to collect anything.

Love your judgement that nobody else knows squat.

I was recently in a position where I nearly lost my life. Following that I can stone cold guarantee you that if I am ever in that situation where somebody is blocking my exit from a burning plane whilst they try to collect their duty frees from the overhead they are going to end up flat on their back in very short order.

It is exactly the same sort of stupidity that you see in reverse from air passengers who leap out of their seats whilst the seat belt lights are still on as soon as the wheels touch down in order to grab their kit to be first off the plane, despite the fact that they'll be waiting until the baggage handlers decide that they are free to leave the terminal.

But in the emergency proceedure film, usually shown before take off, they stress to leave all belongings in the overhead lockers. For goodness sake we've all seen the film or demonstration often enough

Good for you. I would very much like to think I would behave in a similar responsible way. You see I am not for one second advocating it is anything but stupid, but when you sit in your comfy seat in a calm situation at your computer, it is very easy to judge people's actions and presume you would behave differently. Unfortunately unless you have been in that situation you simply don't know.

Would like to think that when you are told to watch the trolley dollys and the videos that show you what to do and not what to do in an emergency. Plus the fact that afore mentioned trolley dollys are screaming in your face to leave your hand luggage, you would know.

Reading a piece yesterday in which the airline companies have to show that they can empty a plane from one side only within 90 seconds should an emergency occur. Said airline companies have said you cannot factor in an aeroplane full of idiots. The airplane was evacuated in less than 90 seconds. Seeing the state of the plane after the event, it was a good job it was.
