Dropping the driver...??

Been pondering this over the past few weeks and took the plunge a few days ago.

I got my driver 'tipped' to make it a stronger flex shaft and I found it was longer off the tee but I was still too inconsistent with it.

So since I got my 3 wood a few weeks ago I've been striking the ball really well with a good control of direction and getting the same distance as the driver goes. Which in turn made the driver redundant.

Is there anyone else on here that doesn't use a driver at the moment?? :D

Curiously because I do get a good distance with my 3 wood Im wondering how much further I can push a driver if I find one I really like and consistent with.

I played my to my lowest HC as a junior without a driver in the bag so i dont think one is needed, especially now the fairways are firming up. Bounces are getting more aggressive so ive started taking my 3wood on tighter holes where position is key over distance and the card is looking better for it. MY 3wood isnt short, but with a regular flex i still feel im holding back slightly just to keep a smoth tempo in the swing. Id love to get hold of a matching 3w to my currect one in stiff to be able to drop a drivere in teh summer months.

Really depends on the course.

My home course is over 6700 off the whites and I take a driver on every hole to give me the shortest iron in.

Shorter courses and tighter courses could be done with a strong 3 wood as the longest club with no problems. As long as you get about 230ish (plus the odd bit of extra roll) out of it then you are fine.

I had similar thoughts after last weekends medal.

There are 5 holes at our place where the green is either drivable or i'm usually within 30 yards of it if straight with the big stick.

Starting this week i'm gonna experiment hitting 3 wood on these holes as i am more accurate with it. Be interesting to see how my scores fair.

Give it a go mate, no harm in trying.

I currently do not have a 3 wood, i tried one from the second hand bag in the pro shop and I hit it really well.

I think i will need one for my trip up north where the courses I am playing are shorter and tigher.

I say if you do not need the extra 30+ yards length why not leave it out.

My course is 6500 with some 440yard narrow par 4's so accuracy off the tee is very important.

I have found I can hit the fairway a lot more often than I can with the driver and since there isn't too much difference in distance (5-10yards) I just think the driver needs to stay out of my bag.

I've yet to use a driver. Partly through funds & partly as a result of advice I started off playing with only irons, and have added a 3 wood & hybrid.

Two years in now I would have thought i'd have one by now, but its not lack of distance from the tee thats costing me shots, its definitely the 'touch' around the green for me.

So I think I'll be without one for a bit longer, although the (short term) competitor in me rises up & pushes for one every time I get left 50 yards behind a monster drive.
Although the longer term competitor shuts him up over the next few holes when we're tramping the rough looking for another long but not quite straight one!

I think I managed ok round your place with just my 3 wood off the tee. It certainly got me into less trouble than if I was using the driver. (except the times I topped it).

I'm in the same camp as nowtfancy no driver, got the hang of my 3 wood and playing better. That said comparing our handicaps you and I play a different game! ;)

Our club pro and assistant think the the Titleist 910D2 is stupidly easy to hit...

My driver is being left in my bag for the summer unless it's a very long par 5. There is only a difference of a club between my driver and 3wood most day's anyway. I would prefere to be in the middle of the fairway and 20 yards shorter then a drive that is in trouble in the rough. I'm going to stick with my 3wood for a while anyway

I'm not dropping the driver but I am going to be much more judicial in its use this season.

Couple of contrasting examples.

Played at Brough (very nice but tight course). Only pulled the driver out on a couple of occasions, other than that it was 3 wood all the way. Sub 80 round.

Played at Hull on Saturday (nice course, not as tight as Brough but still fairly tight). Blazed away for the first 5 holes with the big dog and dropped 11 shots. Put it away for the rest of the round and only dropped one shot.

Lesson learned for me.

'tis, although I went for the extra forgiveness and the ball seems to go very high now with very little roll out but straight enough!

As for the OP I went a few rounds without a driver a the start of the year and never really noticed that much of a difference only when into the wind and on long par 4's.

I hit driver pretty much until I can't. Like if the fairway runs out or there is a bunker right where I carry the driver.

generally i just use my 3 wood off the tee, hate using driver. nim to inconsistant with it. had a lesson with a pro and he said to just use 3 wood the now till i get another lesson to sort out my swing for the driver cos i always get a major slice with it, but with the 3 wood its always straight down the middle and even the time when i do hit my driver straight im usually further with the 3 wood or just short of the ball hit with the driver

Not thinking about dropping the driver but there are a few holes at my place where there is potential trouble off the tee and with the fimer bounces these are starting to come into play and so the 3 wood will be getting more of a go. On the plus side this tells me one thing - SUMMER IS HERE
