Ball entered water hazard (ditch). About to take drop behind point of entry when as the ball left my hand, my playing partners shouted they could see the original on the bank. My substitute ball had not but the ground or, therefore, come to rest. Which ball should be deemed "in play" and should therefore be played?

The substituted ball is in play as soon as it leaves your hand (Rule 20-4).

Thanks Guys - I thought as much and called disqualification on myself today with our handicap secretary. I had continued playing with the original ball which, as you confirm, was incorrect. There is always next month - cheers.

I thought it was only in place when it touches the course.

Therefore in theory if you dropped it and caught it before it touches the ground then it's not in play.

Forget theory. It's in play when it leaves your hand. If you purposely interfere with it after it leaves your hand, it's a breach of the Rules.
