A month or so back I put an 18 & 21 driving iron style hybrid in my bag, absolutely love them, my affair with the hybrids just petered out and died.
As a self confessed useless eejit with a 3 wood off the deck I'm considering putting in the Taylormade UDI 1 iron and dispensing with the 3 wood.
Has anyone done similar?
I don't really use the 3 wood off the tee at my home course and can move the 18 DHY out to around 200, as a short hitter I wont be doing par 5's in 2 anyway.
And if I go for it off the deck with my 3 wood I might catch it flush 50% of the time, but it's a club which has always troubled me.

nobody knows your game better than you ,so really its you that has got to decide, my personal idea would be to get the iron as you are having trouble hitting the 3 wood. whats the worst that can happen ?if you hit it just as bad as the 3 wood you havent lost anything ,if you hit it better then bingo you are on a winner.

I had a hit with the udi and like all clubs the good ones were amazing, but they were few and far between. Our pro has the new ping cross over in and I actually like the look of it.

I have a Titleist 712U 3 iron. It is reasonably easy to hit, although I mostly use it off the tee.

The new version, the 716 with a TT AWT shaft looks interesting too.

Mizuno MP-H5 is also a very playable option.

I love long irons and hit them better than hybrids (hybrids just go further). I've tried a good handful of driving irons and I struggle to get launch from them. I recently bought a Ping Rapture driving iron, it was a bloody worm burner. Replaced by a Callaway Apex hybrid, wee headed hybrid that launches fine.

I'm the same with a 3 wood too, ditched mine months ago and went back to the 5 wood. Gives a much better launch, flight and results

I used an 18 degree UDI most of last season with great results. Our course is very firm and it went miles off the tee due to run. I also found it pretty easy to get up in the air but, I have recently been gaming an 18degree apex hybrid and think I will keep as it offers pretty much everything the UDI offered me, more forgiveness and a launches pretty high automatically. It is very easy to hit low if required too.

I just picked up an MP-H5 4 iron cos my irons start at 5. Looking forward to giving it a go but realise it's going to replace one if my hybrids, and perhaps not really do what a 4 iron in my Mp54s would. Also on the look out for a fairway wood, trying to increase my options at the top end of my bag. Interesting thread good to hear others thoughts on driving irons

Ive been looking at a DHY and recently tried the Crossover and was more than impressed.
tried the 3# tour stiff and was a rocket.

jusrt doesnt fit into any gaps in my bag..

i thought we did this a couple of weeks ago?

I don't get it about not being able to hit a hybrid, but a 1 irons is going to make the game easy!!!

each to there own, i played with a guy at an open a few years ago that had a weird driving iron from the 80's. he couldn't hit a driver or woods for toffee, but skulled this thing miles.

The pro dhy is as hybrid as I get, it was miles better head to head for my swing. 1 iron would be for tee shots only, I'm probably getting my 3 wood shortened by an inch anyway to see if that may help. As my club is on the coast there's always a wind so it may be a good investment.

I can cream my 3 and 4 hybrids without even thinking about it. i struggle with the 3 wood of the deck. I replaced with 15 degree 3 wood with a 17 degree adjustable 2 hybrid. The 2 hybrid goes as well as the 3 wood did.

Whats it like of the deck?
and tee?

Probably not as high flying as most hybrids but you swing it like long iron really and its probably more forgiving than it looks. Especially when you hit it slightly thin which makes it great off the deck in my opinion.
Its workable as well. Pretty much the only club I feel comfortable fading and drawing.
