I've just got back from a round in the glorious sunshine (wahay!) with my regular playing partner. A few weeks ago we were chatting and, after discussing how rubbish I had been playing with my woods of late (I've now retired them from the bag for the time being - costing me too many shots), he mentioned that he might have an old 1 iron lying around in his garage. I asked him to bring it along to our next game which he did today!

So. Out comes the 'Masters 1 Iron'. It looks ridiculous - really don't see how it could be any less lofted than it is (I have no idea what loft it actually is but it can't be much more than my driver I don't think, if at all).

I hit it off the first tee and put a very gentle fade on it to land on the right hand side of the fairway. Quite pleased with the first hit. Throughout the round I used it off every par 4 and 5 hole (12 in total) and hit 10/12 fairways with it. One of the fair ways I missed I pushed it ever so slightly on a really tight fairway and it ended up in a fairway water hazard - any other hole and it would have been on the fairway. The other I hooked it slightly and ended up 10 yards to the left of the fairway in the rough.

I also had no trouble getting it lofted off the fairway without a tee, though it took me until 14th hole to actually have the balls to try it!

What is more, it's going just as far as I hit my driver off the tee and is massively more reliable (I appreciate what that says about my use of an actual driver, but still!). I literally can't believe how much this 15 year old club helped my game today. It's a shame the short game is crap.

So does anyone know where I can get my hands on a modern 1 iron to try? Do manufacturers make them still? I don't really like hybrids because I find them to be too much like a wood (or at least the ones I've tried are - long graphite shafts, etc...). If they're not about I'll keep using this.

Ebay is the place for Driving irons!

But if you are hitting that one well, why consider anything else!

Worth checking out the (low lofted - 16*) Adams Pro, Pro DHy or Pro Mini hybrids. Quite iron-like - at least much more than the XTD or Idea ones, which are quite wood-like!

The Pro DHy is particularly iron-like.

I was never a fan of one or two irons when the were en vogue in the 80's. However they seems a lot more forgiving than the old butter knives they use to be. I don't have any issues with my woods (kiss of death) but if I was playing somewhere like a links course regularly where position away from pot bunkers is a priority then I'd definitely think about one

Thanks guys - that's a fair point about not bothering to try anything else to be honest, Fox.

I'll just get this thing re-gripped and carry on with it I think!

Some pictures of it below - excuse my messy room!

Callaway utility, Ping utility or DHY range from Adams.

Alternatively, try a low lofted hybrid?

Every hybrid I've tried in the past has felt too much like a wood to me (which I struggle with hugely) and not enough like an iron. I find it interesting that I can hit this iron so well because the cavity on the back is tiny and as you can see from the pictures the sole is less than 2cm across. I struggle to hit my G10 4 iron properly but this thing I find easy. Only cost me a pint in the club house after the round! Cheapest club 'upgrade' ever!

Swing fault alert!!! Haha

Assuming it isn't a fluke and continues to be agreeable for more than a single round, I imagine my woods will leave the bag forever to be replaced by this or something similar. Random 1 iron and then 3-9. Happy days.

Why didn't you say something the other day. I am sure I have a couple in the garage. I will take a look tomorrow. You are welcome to have them free of charge.

Haha, thanks! I hadn't tried one at that point and had completely forgotten about the 1 iron discussion by the time we played!

I can't believe it has taken me so long to try a driving iron! It's been a revelation. Would highly recommend the mizuno ones!

i would avoid myself, i wood or hybrid has to be easier to hit, i would try an get used to using either of those. don't get me wrong ive dabbled with a 2 iron myself and when i'm swinging well its a nice club esp around somewhere like fortrose which is short and always windy.

but i say make the game easier not harder!

Suppose it just goes to show how different everyone is. I'll update after another round with it. We'll see if it still holds a shine after the honeymoon first round!

you may want to check lofts, my 3 iron is 17 degrees, for me it's a driving iron and pretty forgiving off the tee and deck.Pretty sure old 1 irons are around 16/17 degrees.

I have three.
1. 15.5 deg standard shaft length
2. 16 deg stiff 1 inch longer than std
3. 16.5 deg std shaft 1 inch longer than std

You can try them all. I fancy trying them at the range too, just too see how they are compared to how I remember.
Let me know if you want to try any.

I wouldn't mind trying 1 and 2. Perhaps you could bring them along when we next play??
