Driver fitting tonight

Getting my first ever club fitting tonight, going for a driver fitting at direct golf. Yeah yeah, I know it's probably not the place a lot would recommend but I've been having lessons with a pro there who is a really sound guy.

Really looking forward to it, I will be replacing my ageing square Nike dymo sq driver which is the oldest club in my bag by some distance. Bought it 6 years ago cos it was cheap, I wasn't playing a great deal at the time and I had a banned TM R580. It's an ugly sod, no wonder square drivers bit the dust.

In my head I've narrowed it down to a G30 (or G30 sf tec) Callaway XR or a SLDR if they have any suitable ones left. Veto'd the next tier up like the R15 etc as they simply cost too much, but any other suggestions?

The world is your oyster! Do not discount the lesser known brands, being direct golf, they will suggest the John Letters gear which is getting great reviews, Benross are another to look at, I would add in the Aeroburner, titleist range, cobra, Maybe some bargains about being mid season, i would like to try the Anser and the i20. Hmm what else?

Just go with an open mind and buy the one that works best!

I'm going to look at the Titleist range for the top end of the bag once I have got my irons upgraded. Was torn between the titleist 915 and the Taylormade range. By all accounts TM is about distance and the Titleist more accuracy.

Re: Driver fitting tonight

Would be interested to hear your review of the process, keep talking myself out of going for a new driver myself

nice one

I've still got a TM R580. I use it to try to increase my swing speed (in the garden with a swing-speed radar . . . . 112 mph is my max so far.)

Driver suggestion . . . if the fitter says it's right, it feels right and looks OK, go for it. Don't worry about labels!

I gave mine to my 3 rounds a year mate, he still has it. It goes bloody miles (not in his hands mind!)

So, I will shortly be the proud owner of a new Ping G30 sf tec! Tried a good range of drivers to start with, a few words below.

Nike Vapor Speed - Didn't get on with this at all, it felt a bit 'mickey mouse', lightweight and plasticky.

Callaway XR - Looked nice but didn't like the feel and most shots seemed on the low side.

Cobra Fly Z - Few good hits but seemed to be a bit of a hook machine, which is unusual for me given that my recent lessons seem to have led to a slight fade.

SLDR - Few good hits but not forgiving enough, miss hits really didn't travel.

Adams Blue - This was a surprise. Lovely club, and one I'd never have thought to try.

G30 sf tec - Did what it says, totally eliminated the right hand side. Best shots were ever so slight straight pulls, a few baby fades but nothing at all far right, when usually a big push cut is my destructive shot.

G30 - Felt exactly the same as the sf tec and offered the same distance but a few baby fades did turn over more than the SF tec and dispersion wasn't quite as tight.

Had my driver swing measured at 108mph average which was interesting, never had this done before so always been guessing. Narrowed it down to the Adams Blue and the SF tec in the end but the sf tec just won out down to it averaging slightly longer distance and the confidence it gave me. Then tried it with a couple of different Ping shafts and nothing worked as well as the standard stiff one, the tour stiff just launching a tad low. Standard stiff with the 10 degree driver moved up to 10.6 degrees gave the best figures.

What did surprise me was how all the clubs felt massively different from my current Nike Dymo Sq 2. They all felt 3 wood length in the hands despite none of em being any shorter shafts which was weird, and on a decent swing they were all more forgiving and longer. Just shows technology does advance, maybe not so much year on year but definitely if you leave it 5 or 6 years. The real surprise was the Adams Blue, club snobbery would never usually have seen me try that but it really is a good club and if anyone else is in the market you should have a look.

First of all, thanks for the write up - very interesting!

Second of all - damn you. Damn you to Hell!!!!! Right, looks like I'm going to have to give in :)

Nike Vapor Speed - I haven't even swung one in anger but just waving the R flex around the shop the head was wobbling at the end and I thought "that's too whippy", perhaps I'd beed a stiffer shaft?

Callaway XR - Don't like the look myself, so not inclined to try it - we're a funny bunch aren't we?! And we say we don't get handbags.

Cobra Fly Z - Not on my radar.

SLDR - Interesting, I assumed it would be reasonably forgiving?

Adams Blue - It shouldn't have been a surprise, they've been making superb hybrids for years and I believ this step into the Driver market is a solid one. I'll be giving it and the Red a lash.

G30 sf tec - I tend not to slice, natural shot a draw, bad shot a hook, so probably the standard is where I'm looking

G30 -Cool.

108mph - sounds good!

Standard stiff with the 10 degree driver moved up to 10.6 degrees gave the best figures. - This is what I've been thinking, my Ping G15 12 degree has a tendancy to balloon when I get into it, I wonder with my new found speed am I outgrowing the G15. I also found I didn't get on with the regular shaft in the Ping G20 4 wood I had, too whippy. So Im wondering if like you I need to move up in shaft and down in loft.

Thanks dude, much appreciated despite my earlier damnation of your soul.

;)
