Busy day today....

Went to a golf place not that far from me, and it has a track man type machine, it is indoor, but good setup.

Had just went for a potter round as off and the missus was shopping, anyway, I came across the Titleist 910 d2, stiff rip shaft, so I asked if I could hit a few.

They taped the driver up and cranked the technology, was all very interesting, showed things like swing speed ball speed launch angle, carry distance and where it is going plus some other things too.

My swing speed with the driver was up at 109 max and ave 106, ball speed around the 150 mark i think, launch angle was between 13 and 18 deg, hit 15 balls, ave carry was 270, max was 285, min 254, 3 went more than 20 yards right, but the rest had a dispersion of 15 yards. was great to see these things, not sure how true they would reflect on the course like....

Anyway, my point(sorry it took so long) Do I part with 280 of my hard earned cash for this driver? or wait and try the tm r11? as it was impromtu i did not have my clubs, so it would be a case of heading back there with my own driver to compare.

Cheers

JT

I would first get the readings from using my own driver then try a whole range of different drivers with different shafts.

Make the comparisons and see if it makes big improvements.

After all you are spending the best part of 300 notes.

Its funny this whole 'get fitted for a Driver' thing, I was one of a very lucky 3 who 2yrs ago, via Golf Monthly, was offered the fantastic opportunity to go down to Titleist for a full custom fit session for the 'new then' 909 Drivers.

A fantastic day was had, and I was soon the proud owner of a new 909D2 courtesy of GM & Titleist.

Trouble was, from the day it arrived, I couldnt get on with it at all, couldnt stop it slicing horribly, and after a few months, I gave up, and went back to my G5.

Inevitably, I'm not sure the whole process works every time.

So....boldly, after everyone's rave reviews of the 910's, I picked up a D3 for £216, which so far, considering my rustiness after a long winter, seems to go very well. High hopes for the summer.

Some good advice.

I hear what your saying macster, as a handicap golfer i realise that my swing can differ a little day by day.

Was good to see the stats though, but i think i will get my driver and see what its like, then try some more.

Who knows i may keep mine! :)

Same as macster the fitted driver I had was a nightmare but after speaking to the guy that fits me for all my clubs suggested a different shaft and hey presto went like a dream, went to him when I wanted a 910 and with his suggestion on a shaft so far it is going well.

What you have to remember is on these fittings you hit 20-30 drives in a row, on the course you maybe hit 2 drives in a row if you put the first O.O.B, on these tests maybe you should hit a drive followed by a couple of irons then see how easy you pick it up?

Cannot remember where I read it but saw a suggestion that you should only ever hit 3 or 4 balls in one go when trying a club. Any more and you start asjusting to the club rather than finding a club that suits you.

After all the duff clubs I have bought when I conveniently forget all the duff shots that I hit when I picked it up, this may not be bad advice.

I got my 910 D2 fitted yesterday at a range where I could see the full flight, now I've bought a driver after hitting it in nets with trackman and being told how well the stats were.
The thing is when I got it on the course Cack!
I was told the trackman stats at the range this time but TBH I didn't need them as the flight and distance achieved sold the club to me. I'd wait until you can see the full flight before buying.

Funnily enough went to a TM demo tonight. Tried the R11 again in various options (shaft and set up) and still don't like it but I also hit the Superfast burner. I am usually a 10.5 degree R flex and tried that and hit it OK. Went to a stiff shaft as an experiment (only had the stock TM shaft in them) and that wasn't much cop. Went back to my Tour burner and hit it better than any I had tried so it isn't a case of new always being better.

The one thing I did notice was that my black head looked much smaller behind the ball after hitting the all whit clubs and so not sure if that conversely helped me focus

I went for a diver fitting and could not get along with the r11 it felt too heavy. So I tried the 910 d2 and was pretty similar to the r11 on carry so the bloke doing the fitting changed th shaft to ilima daimana red and I was getting about 20yd extra carry and the ball flight was a lot better.

I'm going to try it at the range for he first time tonight to have a play around with it.

Does a driver really make that much of a difference? I mean, really? Or is it just in the mind?

I have a Wilson driver, got it as part of a full set and that seems fine. It looks like all other drivers really, and I seem to hit it fine. How would a different driver make any difference?

I genuinely dont know.

It does if the new driver/shaft combo get the right launch conditions. I''ve had drivers in the past - good names like Callaway,Ping etc and they've just not worked for me. Not doubting the club, they just didn't complement my swing. Now I've been on a launch monitor and found a shaft/head combo that launches at the right angle, with the right amount of spin and with a flex that gets the head square(ish) at impact, I'm now driving better than I have for 10 years - all down to the right head/shaft.

Thanks for the answer. So given I seem to hit my driver ok-ish, i wouldnt have a need to try something else then? No idea about flex, other than there's a sticker on the shaft saying mens flex. Its a 2010 Wilson Pro Tour LCD set. I cant hit the hybrid though, so had to buy a 4 iron, which i really like. Might have to try some differnt hybrids, because ive got it into my head now that i cant hit mine... :-(

I was slicing a fair bit, but played a round the other week with a member who helped me out a great deal, fixed my stance up (i was hitting it outside my left foot), and it "seems" to work better. I'll play 9 this afternoon to see what it's like on course before playing 18 in the morning.

Think of the shaft of a club as the engine. Like a well tuned car, if the engine is working at optimum performance then the car will be at its best in terms of speed, mpg etc. Logic says that C/F would give you the best choice of shaft and to a large degree I'd go along with that and it's an avenue I'll look at when I want to upgrade my Tour Burner.

However I do believe there are plenty of good off the shelf models that aren't necessarily bank busters that would have better shaft options. Its really a question of speaking to a pro etc and seeing what he thinks (having seen your swing) and what your own preference is in terms of flex, kick point etc
