I'm currently in the market for a new driver, and as new models are out of my price range, I intend on conducting a trial of sorts with 2 possibly 3 drivers, and going with the one that performs best on the range. There will be no Trackman/FLightscope stats, just me and a bucket of balls, trusting my eyes and feel/judgement.

So, the first contender which is en route is a Cobra ZL Encore, 10.5 in regular. Got it off the 'bay for under a £100 in very good nick. Also eyeing up an Adams 9064LS too to try it against.

So good forum, what drivers (under £100) should I look for to try as another alternative? No brand loyalty and wil consider anything. After I've tried all 3, I will plump for a winner and sell the other two.

What do you think I should try?

without watching you swing one it's impossible to recommend - most of any significant difference will be in the loft / shaft combination

Only one answer to my mind, Cleveland Classic XL. Well under £100 brand new and I still cannot believe that these did not fly off the shelves when released. I know a few people who have snapped them up now they are cheap

Hi there,

I have a Ping G20 (stiff shaft) in great condition which you can have for less than £100. Send me a pm if interested.

Can't go past the 9064LS imo - the one in Chorley perchance? I might be a tad 'biased' have 2 9064s and a 9015D!

There were also some Cleveland Classic XLs w Black Tie for £99 - new - a week or so ago. Worth it for the shaft alone!

I hate threads like this. One man's meat is another man's poison. You really just need to try out a few second hand drivers at your local range or AG to find one that you like the look/feel/sound of.

I don't get on with TM drivers but lots of people love them so you really can't go by what other people say.

Boohoo. Thanks all for the suggestions..

I got my covert vrs for £95 brand new and love it. I found The Cleveland xl was nice to hit though

Just skipped through the thread but the cobra would be my choice for first go, had the zl and it was a monster, only replaced with a stiffer shafted cobra (s9 pro). I have found that cobra make great golf kit!
