I don't own a driver and I am thinking of getting one. I don't know how to hit them but I will learn. Would you invest in a newer model or pick up a older/cheaper one to learn with or stick with a 14* mini that I use at the moment ?

Cheers

I bought a callaway great big bertha hawk eye on ebay for £4.50. It's a quality bit of kit and is dead easy to hit. It replaced my more modern driver with a great big head which didn't make the ball go as straight or as far.

Do you hit the Mini well? If so, it's a no brainer. Stick with it. I use the 12* version and have found improved accuracy without sacrificing too much distance. Had a go with my mates R15 driver today, fore right all day long. Mini for me!

Definitely yes to driver for me. Advances in technology haven't been quantum leap forwards in the last 5 years so pick yourself up a bargain, older, used model.

I've been playing a 14* mini myself for the last 9 months and also don't own a driver.

But I'll probably go and get fitted for a 'real' driver soon, to see if I can get more distance out of it without losing too much accuracy.

I wouldn't buy a driver without a fitting, though. I want to make sure it performs better than the mini, also I want to try out various options. I especially want to make sure I can try different shaft lengths - one of the main advantages of the mini vs. most contemporary drivers is the shorter shaft, so I'll probably try shafts of maybe no more than 44".

If you hit the mini well, chances are any used driver you pick up, even if it's a good one, won't give you much the mini can't give you.

I've been thinking about just getting a used driver for little money just to try it out, but decided against it, because if it doesn't work I'll never know if it's just an ill fitting driver or my swing.

Got to agree with the thoughts of an older used driver, I am using a Ping G15 I have had from new, about six year old, still going great.

Thanks for the advice. I may look to try a older model driver as well as a 12* mini driver, or take up bowls 😁

I got to 11 as a junior ( well from 14 to 18 ) playing a vantage eliminator 3w as my longest club. I've never been a massive hitter but that would find the fairway all day long.

Long doesn't win comps, straight wins comps.

Go with whatever gives you the best chance of the lowest scores

As others have said you would do a lot worse than try to find an old Ping G10 Geezer.
Lovely driver and you should be able to pick up a good "used" one for peanuts nowadays.
10.5 degrees regular would suit you fine.
;)

What's your usual bad shot shape? A driver could exaggerate this.

Adjustable head drivers may reduce this so something to consider.

I might know someone who has some! ;-)

I picked up a Callaway V series 10.5 (adjustable) for just £76 a few weeks ago. it's the first driver for me that does not feel like it has a lump at the end of it.
