morning all,

after not carrying a driver for best part of 3 years and relying on my 3 wood I have decided to take the plunge and get a driver.

Given my past experiences with the big stick I am not going to go out and spend £200+ on something I might not get on with so I am looking on fleabay and have narrowed my choices down to;

- Taylormade Aeroburner mini - I tried one the other week and it was ok
- Taylormade SLDR
- Taylormade Aeroburner
- Ping Anser
- Cobra AMP

I have a TM hybrid and 3 wood already so having a driver would keep my woods the same make (not a great reason to have a TM driver!) but I am giving serious consideration to the Ping and Cobra drivers.

has anyone got either the Ping or Cobra drivers and if so what do you think of them?

I have a Ping G30, very forgiving so if it is not much more then try that. I have anser hybrids and like them but they are more 'better player' so may be a risky option. Look at Ping G25 too. The more forgiveness the better for you!

Buy a PING G15 for £60-70 on EvilBay. Used to own one and got rid of it for a Titleist 915D2 to the tune of £300. I'm not hitting it any further and the only reason I am more consistent with it, is purely due to game time with it. I'd hit any other driver the same way. Save your cash :) Really considering getting shot of it and getting a G15 again. Put the money to a good set of water proofs for the winter.

I've posted this before and will post it again, but http://www.mygolfspy.com/golf-club-center-of-gravity-cg/ and http://www.mygolfspy.com/the-most-popular-drivers-of-2015-secret-cg-locations/ are worth a read before taking a plunge with a driver. Some of the ones you mentioned are (relatively) not that forgiving so depends what you are looking for. Plus the G30 and Fly Z are the ones that offer the best combination of forgiveness, high launch and low spin, i.e. the best compromise.

Very interesting links my man and they seem to contradict the marketing guff put out by the big brands. I now want a Ping G30 driver. Bar steward.

I'd pose a question and ask why bother getting a driver if you are playing well with the 3 wood? If you are accurate and a good distance then why not a new putter or wedges, lessons perhaps? Or maybe a new 3 wood? Just a thought.

You saying that some of the marketing of new drivers may not be totally truthful??? The ones that are always accompanied with videos of pros nailing them every time and gaining significant yardage? You saying that they neglect to mention the fact that whilst you may be able to hit the odd shot a country mile, most of the time to the average golfer they are not that forgiving really, so on average your distances may well actually come down?

How dare you.;)

Where's the fun in that?

Well landing on the fairway sounds a lot more fun then hooking a low drive into trees at a 100 miles an hour! Or perhaps that's just me!

That's just you.

Making a hash off the tee with your driver helps to maximise your investment in both other clubs and your golf membership.

Win:Win

I don't normally have a problem with duffing approach shots, chip, putts etc, but for some reason screwing it badly off the tee really gets to me, hence my caution I suppose with pulling the big dog out of the bag! each to their own. (I think I have personally funded my Pro's used ball basket fort about 5 years now!)
