Hi all,

How many of you use a driver on a fairway? Alot of people I play with cant believe that I do it and are amazed when I reach the green on long 5's in two.

I dont have a 3 wood as I can hit my driver as a 3 wood and further and dont seem to have the need as yet? Is this abnormal or am I being paranoid?

Cheers,

Kev

What’s your handicap mate? It’s a hard shot to pull of repeatedly successfully.

Monty loves to do it, I have tried once or twice with decent success of mats at the range but have no chance on grass, much prefer my high flying rocket 3 wood.

a couple of guys i play with do it at the drop of a hat, pull out the big dog without as much as a twitch and bang it down the fairway, amazing to watch

I am just getting back into regular golf mate and my putting has been woefull, I was out last night and shot a 86 but had a few 3 putters but I am improving and getting the feel for my new putter. I am in the process of joinging a new club so will have to do three cards but the best I got down to was 8 and that was 3 years ago. What sort of 3 wood do you hit?

Ive hit my mizuno a couple of times where I was playing into the wind, I find its easier to intnetionally fade the ball off the deck so alowing for it means it will only turn one way. Saying that, the 4 and 5 woods go just as far as they are finding the sweetspot rather than just below it with a 460cc driver head.

I could do it with my old TM 320 but never before or since.

Got a couple of mates who can do it at will, one off 3,other off 18, go figure!

My brother in law did it wednesday night and his mate does it all the time, i dont think its uncommon! If you can, why not!

I reckon that is the key - depends on how forgiving your driver is below the sweetspot

My course is mainly a bit too tight in spots where you could entertain the Driver off the fairway but I often hit it out of the rought if the lie is ok. Like alot of poeple here, I use the driver to punch into the wind on a long hole off the deck but as its a fairly high risk shot I won't play it or practise it often. HAVING SAID THAT, the times when I have called on it, pulled it off and put the ball where I wanted, its felt like I'm a proper golfer!

I would use it in the winter with lift clean and place - thjere is no way I would use it now though.

The man who I played with on Saturday won the comp - he is quite frail due to illness his driving is short (max 170yds) but accurate (as his whole game is), this fella takes the driver out for loads of second shots. It works well for him - even with a 20 handicap.

I don't see a problem with this. I thinking one might be bragging just a little bit :D

Only wish I had the ability to do it, well actually I have the wrong sort of driver for doing this, the sweet spot is quite high on the maxed out face size, and I think the shaft is too whippy to get an accurate strike, and I think the object attached to the shaft is a complete doofuss :D

Tried it a few times and the success rate tells me not to. If it’s sitting nice, possibly slightly uphill then I’ll give it a go…………….but not in a comp round unless I was real desperate.

A driver isn’t really designed to skim over the top of the fairway like a quality 3 wood.

i hit mine off fairway but not very well! works best in dry conditions for the run , recon id do better off fairway with a square driver!

I used my old 250cc driver off the deck quite often, preferably on a slight up-hill, sitting up lie. Would I do it with a 460cc driver? ... um ... NO!
If you can.....great.....

We have a grassy mound that we are allowed to pick and place on. Its on a par 5 about 270 from the tee. I always try to land on it so I can give myself a "tee'd" up lie and smack it with the driver again. Normally at worst par the hole and I regularly birdie it and have even eagled it with a 3ft putt. So if you can - do!!

My old Callaway Big Bertha Driver was great off the fairway, pretty much a low fade/slice shot every time. When I got a Taylor Made Burner, I kept the Callaway just for fairway shots. When the Taylor was declared illegal I went for a Titleist 907 D1 which I have never tried to hit off the fairway: the head is just too big and I usually hit it with a low trajectory off a tee the size of the Eiffel Tower. My old (1983) Ping 3 wood (made of wood!) does a similar job now.
