I currently play with a Ping G10 10.5 regular. I'm by no means a big hitter 220ish is a average drive for me. But don't miss many fairways. My problem is I feel I get too much height, which gives me very little run. Is it worth trying a lower loft driver or different shaft? Any advice appreciated

The best way is to venture somewhere that has a launch monitor and see if it's spin rate launch angle etc causing the flight and lack of run out.

If you don't miss many fairways and hit it 220, then keep it ;)

Other than that, if your desperate to spend, then either get a lesson or book a fitting and try as many different drivers as you can! The Ping stock shafts in the G series are deigned to get the ball up in the air maybe a shaft with a lower kick point would help.... Best thing is to have fun trying!!!

It's not that I'm not happy with 220,just feel that with a lower flight I could get it out a bit further. Or I could I could spunk a load of money on a new driver, then bang it on eBay after 6month & go back to the G10:confused:

Get a lesson first, you could be hitting up on it too much.

Also the harder you swing the higher the spin, you could be swinging too hard and losing distance.

Lesson first, then launch monitor then new club! Thats the route I went, my swing speed was 108 and 7500 spin, now the spin is 2400 with my new driver and better technique!

And how much as affected your ball flight. Might be a stupid question

Interesting thread this.

I had a Mizuno MP 630 driver that gave me a bonkers low flight. I've switched to a 910 with the Kai'li and I'm carrying the ball much further thanks to more height and still manage a little run. Completely the opposite to you

I got fitted for my irons and mentioned my woods to the fitter who suggested the change.

Rather than splash the cash on guess work, speak to someone who knows be it a fitter or your pro.

As others have said hitting it high isn't the problem, it's the spin rate. I recently had a fitting for a 913 fairway and started with a spin rate of 4800-5000 with the first shaft. We changed to a lower launch shaft and although surprisingly the launch angle increased slightly I had a flatter overall flight it did peak at a similar height but with a spin rate of 2800 and an increase of 15 yards. The Titleist fitter was very impressed that the spin rate was down below 3000 after only one shaft change. Swing speed was 105.8 giving a total carry of 248. Suffice to say I bought the club and am currently using a demo 913 driver with similar shaft.

I tried all sorts of driver and shaft combinations with mixed results. A lower loft helped however it also increased the chances of a fade or slice. Changing shafts had mixed results, however the one driver I tried that did bring the height down was the Taylormade Superfast TP with the Matrix HD6 shaft, (The shafts in the TP range are genuine OEM shafts not made for). The only problem was the open face which emphasised my natural fade.

A few weeks ago I saw the RBZ TP's in a sale on ebay with a standard RBZ head for £129, (not the tour model, Gold with Geoff and Elle who are authorised TM distributers), so I took the plunge and bought it.

I know TM get a lot of stick for changing drivers but the head and club combo have changed my game. I now get a penetrating flight that is straight.

I hated the R11S but the RBZ is a simple, no frills easy to use driver that hits the ball a long way. I went for 10.5 degrees and a regular shaft, (the Matrix HD6 shaft is firm), and I couldn't be happier as I've tried many other drivers and this one is a keeper.
