No its not another one of those should I hit driver or 3-wood... I needed to hit both, all day!

Quite a breeze on Saturday and playing a long ol course anyway I took driver off the tee for 14 holes followed by a 3-wood 2nd shot 13 times, and none made it to the greens!

Fortunately I was having a good day with the short irons/PW and while I’d never call it boring but taking driver then 3w on every hole did become a bit predictable, the only plus is the mid irons will be quick to clean :)

Ever get those days when you have deja vue on the course?

Tactical layup?

Sound strange but at my local par 3 I do see some taking out the driver on a 90 yard hole....

If you scored well then it does nay matter. No shot plots on the scorecard as they say.

Usually for me it's just says where lots of putts lip out. I try to not let it bother me as that would only make things worse.

Being a powder puff hitter, a lot of the holes at Forest of Arden were out of range. Most par fours over 420 yards are for me. I laid up at each one as the risks weren't worth it and made 9/10 points on those holes. I guess it should have been a template for playing most courses but of course most of the time I play and still go for the 3wood glory shot and wonder where these doubles come from

It's about playing to strengths and distance isn't one of mine. I should be using my head and shots better. I should but don't

Welcome to my world :) For me par 4s are almost always driver/three wood and then some.

Yup and I am exactly the same, if I am lucky I get the odd iron shot to the green if I get a very good drive away.
But and this is a massive but, I think it depends on the course. Some of them we played in Northumberland I could play an iron in the greens with a second shot.Again it depends which pots you are playing from.

As a short hitter myself I'm well used to fairway woods for second shots with pitch shots onto par 4's but the combo of course and conditions on Saturday meant it was only a single hole (the shortest par 4 that's driveable for the big hitters) was the only one I could do driver/iron on

But I hit every fairway bar 1 and the 3w was working well (if not long) so it was still a good fun days golf though

Oh golf is an odd game. When I got fitted for me new shinys at Ping the other week. I had a fitting on my driver and my fairway woods.
Driver.
The right grip has been put on and the tour shaft is now a permanent fixture. Our SI 1 a 580yd par five is 180 yd carry to the fairway. Which is mint when you were hitting 171yd carry, ball hits 2" grass and dies ending up on first cut. Friday. Ball carries to fairway and runs on 30-40 yd. longest I have hit a ball on that fairway. It's not just that it carries further. Because of the distance the Large bunker on the right is now not an issue for my second shot. For the first time ever I was long with my third wood into the green.
fairway woods.
had a tweak with them and it was gorgeous learning how to hit a fairway wood long and straight.
However, the new shiny Pings are taking some getting used to chipping and pitching around the green. is it coz of the longer sole on the Ping as against the Titliest?
Time will tell.
