I had been playing pretty regularly (once a week on the course and a couple of range sessions per week) throughout September and up to mid October and at the end of that period I was hitting the ball as well as I ever have been. Really consistent ball striking - my short game was letting me down a little bit on the course, and my plan was to really start working on that now I'm able to have some confidence in my long game and particular live without fear of being 3, or worse off the tee.
However, I was forced by circumstances (very busy week at work, my Mrs' birthday plus a cold and wisdom teeth problems one after the other!) to take a ten day break from picking up the clubs at all. I went to the range on Saturday to get my eye in again, and I was dreadful! I couldn't get any kind of rhythm or consistency going, I wasn't hitting anything out of the middle of the club, my swing felt awkward and completely devoid of any power, I lost all confidence in everything. I was fading the ball with my driver when my problem shot for yonks has been a duck hook, I just could not believe it.
It was a really soul destroying experience! I think I'm going to book myself in for a lesson this week in the hope of getting something resembling an ability to hit the golf ball again ahead of this weekend.
Does this happen to other people too? Any suggestions as to how I can get my ability back? Or failing that, how I can prevent this happening again? A 10 day break shouldn't lead to that level of change in ability, surely!
